Q: Cannot eject disc.  Doesn't even show up on my desktop.  Tried to eject through Disk Utilites says "eject failed. The disk “OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H” could not be unmounted.   Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk."  None open

I cannot eject a CD from my iMac.  It doesn't appear on my desktop or in the finder, but I can hear it spinning sometimes.  I tried to eject it with the Disk Utility and it won't.  Tried turning Mac on it's side, manual eject button on keyboard, also holding down the mouse while restarting.  NOTHING works!  Even tried the two credit card trick.  Can't get them out!  What gives?  It is only around 18 months old if that.

iMac, iOS 5.1

You can try forcing it to eject from open firmware.. hold down command + option + o + f when you turn your computer on, type eject cd at the screen that comes up and hit enter. The CD should be ejected from the drive. To boot to your desktop, type mac-boot and hit enter.

When I do that (command option o and f), it just goes to a blue screen with a loading type icon thing.  Another screen does not show up for me to write in "eject cd". Any other ideas? ;)

It might help for you to post your Mac OS version (the "iOS 5.1" shown in your profile is not a computer OS) and the model iMac you have ("About this Mac" from your Apple menu is a good place to start).

I ask because OPTIARC drives tend to be used in iMacs newer than the pre-2006 models this forum covers. We want to be sure the advice you get is targeted to your model and not one that's over six years old.
