Q: Songs Disappearing from iTunes

I've seen other threads on this marked as answered, but they clearly were not based on the posts in them. At first I thought I was going crazy, or maybe had lost some music when I transferred from my old machine to my new one, but now I have songs I know I bought since moving to the new machine that have disappeared. Not just randomly missing songs, but entire missing albums too. Of course, since backing up my music consisted of simply copying the iTunes folder to an external drive (admittedly lazy way, sure) it happily overwrite the folder as I told it to and thus my backups are missing the songs too. This is complete crap, and is NOT answered as the other threads claim. Even if support allows me to re-download everything (at this point, I couldn't even tell you for sure what I am missing since I don't recall everything I've bought) what stops this from happening in the future? If my hard earned money is just going to vaporize off my hard drive at random when I am trying to play by the rules and be legal, give me one good reason not to just save that money and just start pirating everything? Because as much as I don't like pirating, I don't like buying an entire CD for one good song even less, and I like having stuff I bought simply disappear even less than that.

What is the fix for this problem? If Apple lets me redownload everything, where is the proof this won't happen again? I NEED to have a legitimate answer to this question or you and the music industry can kiss my money goodbye. Limewire will be my new music source.

Same problems here except that in addition to my ripped music some of my older music purchased from Itunes has also disappeared from my hard drive. However, everything in still on my ipod and the titles show up in itunes.

I don't use a server in my setup. All the Itunes music is stored on the local machine.

I am having the same problem as well. I upgraded to Itunes 10.6.7.1 a few weeks ago. I have two PC laptops that I use, one for general use, and one for DJing. I manage my itunes on my main computer, and basically clone my library before I have a gig, so that my itunes folder (which serato reads for my playlists and stuff) is identical to the computer I use daily.

I noticed recently, that i'm getting the grey exclamation points on tracks that I definitely did not delete. When I look for the files, they are completely missing from my external hard drive. Some tracks are also copying themselves. But the tracks I am looking for, GONE. No trace. They remain on my ipod, because I haven't synched in a while,  but they are no where to be found on my hard drive. Luckily I had backups of some of the files, and were able to just drag them into itunes, and it's like nothing ever happened, but not for all of the tracks. And it's annoying to find new ones every time I open Itunes. ***??!?!?

Why are we getting no answer as to why this is happening, and why isn't there a fix???! This is wedding season, and I hate to look for a track and find that it is missing for no reason at all, when I am doing a gig. Or just in general.

Well, I spent about an hour on the phone with Apple today to see if they knew anything about my missing iTunes songs.  The consultant had me try several things and nothing solved the problem.  After talking with a higher level several times, he said that none of the songs were on my hard drive any longer and that I must have deleted them.  He then said that the only thing I would be able to do would be to reload them.  I said that I would first download the songs that I had purchased and see if they “stayed” or if they would disappear like they had before.  What is interesting is that as I clicked on the download from the iTune store, I could not download them since it said that that song was already on my computer. The ! (meaning that it was not there) did show for that song.  I tried several times and was not able to complete the download.  I finally deleted the song and then downloaded it from iTunes. That time it showed up without the !.

What I found interesting is that the only song (outside of the two iTunes that I had just downloaded) that showed up in the iTunes folder was one that was a free download from Amazon. Now I am wondering if iCloud has something to do with the missing songs.

How do you get Apple on the phone? I can let them connect to my desktop and watch the songs disappear as I sync to my iPod...

Calling them usually works. (See Contact Us at bottom right of every Apple page)

But iTunes support is email only.

For what it's worth, the latest update to 10.6.3.25 has addressed this issue for me. I have carefully tested all of the various scenarios that were causing me problems earlier, and none of my tracks are being deleted.

I, too, have been having this problem. Lumping iTunes will just somehow "forget" about some of my songs, so every time I sync my iPod (something I started doing begrudgingly a couple years ago when I found out that's the best way to get accurate statistics on my songs), it's an adventure in song finding, especially fun when I go to play an old favorite that - surprise, surprise - ISN'T THERE ANYMORE. I don't know if this is related, but iTunes is also screwing up album art on some stuff, don't really know what's up with that. I've about had it, though, I'm just about fed up with Apple, and it told me that my standard username, "Maziecat," contained a banned word...DAFUQ, APPLE

Random missing music- files beginning with numbers or starting with U - Z. ***.

Why can't Apple fix this and their Mail while they're at it.

I thought I was fixed. Last night I realized after reinstalling iTunes in an attempt to fix this issue I had not turned the "compression" setting back on. This is where you can tell iTunes to down-sample to 128bit while syncing to the iPod, for example. When I turned that back on, about half of my latest batch of songs to sync went missing.

Getting closer to a specific test case. Those of you that have had songs go missing, are you using this feature?

Yes, I've been using this feature since they introduced it for the latest iPod nano and I have the song deleting problem.

I think it is time that all users of iTunes and iPoda etc stop buying songs. I have purchased thousands of Dollars from Apple in music and until this is fixed (yes it is still happening to me) I will not buy another song or book or anything else from them.

This has been going on for a very long time now, and if this is correct there are many people that have lost songs they worked hard to get on their i-device and paid money for to have save.

How do I get all the music back I am losing? This ***** and is totally and uterly unacceptabel to go on for this long.

We want thsi fixed dear Apple support team!

I made one big mistake - trusting apple with my music collection.
