This worked like a charm and I suggest everyone with iCal sync problems follow these instructions.  Thank you adrian.

I've been dealing with this same problem ever since I went to OS 10.7.3 and icloud on my macbook pro trying to sync with my iphone 4 running ios 5.1.  I went to a Genius Bar and the "genius" did the "back-up calendar on laptop, erase library, import back-up back to ical on laptop" trick and it worked in the store.  We entered an event on the phone and it showed up on the computer and visa versa.  It's now a week or two later, and I've realized I'm back to the same problem:  if I enter an event on my phone, it does not appear on my computer, though events entered on the computer will show up on the phone.  The "Genius"'s advice was to not sync with a cable and let icloud do everything (which is great advice if I don't ever intend to update the software on my phone).  I have not once synced through a cable since leaving the store and, as far as I know, haven't changed any preferences in ical on phone or laptop.  What gives?  I use several different calendars in ical to keep my various activites in order ("work", "home", etc).  Is that causing my grief?  It's worked fine for years!!

I just tried adrian's fix, but there is no + in a lower left corner while a calendar is highlighted.  I tried creating a new calendar on my computer and erasing it and it did nothing.

I have the exact same problem between ical on my iphone and my mac book pro. Any added events on my computer will show up on my phone but not vice versa.  I hope someone will answer soon.

    This worked for me:

Add an event on your Iphone.  Before you press done in the Upper Right corner, scroll down the screen to Calender and press it.

Pick a calender in the section "From My Mac."  (Whether it's Home or Personal, etc.  EG:  In ICal on my Mac, I made a new calender called "Iphone."  So I selected Iphone.  Make sure you don't select below the From My Mac.  My events before on my Iphone were being created in a seperate Gmail calender which didn't sync.

Create your event and sync.  It should pop up in your Mac Ical.

For ease of selecting this new calender, you should make it your default calender on your Iphone.

    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calender.

Scroll all the way down to the bottom and find "Default Calender."  Switch this to the Calender you created.

That's what did it for me.  Hope this helps.

EDIT:  In order to sync, I could sync wirelessly, but had to press sync in iTunes.

Just tried Maria203's suggestion and it worked!  This was needed for Lion because there isn't an option for "icloud" in the account set up.  Thanks!

This is the solution I was looking for! I had yahoo set to grab my calendar and not iCal. Thank you so much for solving my problem!!!

What solved it for me was quite banal:

    open iCal on MacBook

Click on CALENDERS box in top left corner.

Check if the calender you want to sync is online (grey box with lightning flash if not)

Ricght Click the lightning flash or the calender entry itself and select "take calender online"
