Yesterday I purchased an Airport Extreme router to replace my outdated Linksys. The Apple Genius guys told me the router would NOT connect via ethernet to my very old HP LaserJet 4050N, which I could live with. However, I also have a fairly new Canon MX860 printer that is connected via USB to my MacBook Pro and also it was previously set up for wireless connectivity through my Linksys home network. Now I cannot get the Airport Extreme to recognize the printer, which is in a different room from the router and modem. Please help! I can't afford all new peripherals just because I upgraded my router.

The Apple Genius guys told me the router would NOT connect via ethernet to my very old HP LaserJet 4050N, which I could live with.

Not sure why they gave you that advice. Connecting a network-ready printer (wire or wireless or both) to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) should be no different than connecting it to any other manufacturer's router. In this case, the AEBSn would NOT be providing print server functionality and the printer would have this duty. This should hold true for both the HP and the new Canon printers.

Now I cannot get the Airport Extreme to recognize the printer, which is in a different room from the router and modem. Please help! I can't afford all new peripherals just because I upgraded my router.

How do you have the AEBSn configured with the other router? Regardless, what is the make & model of this other router?

That's what I would have thought. My old router was a Linksys WRT54G. I had my HP network printer connected to an ethernet port and could print wirelessly from anywhere in the house. My Canon MX860 communicated wirelessly via its ip address. Now, with the AE, neither works over the network. It's as if the AE doesn't "see" them.

Do you still require both routers in your network configuration? If so, do you have the AEBSn connected to the Linksys by Ethernet or wireless?

The plan was to replace the Linksys with the AE. They are not connected. However, as a workaround, I reconnected the Linksys independently (no internet connection) and can switch to that local network if I need to print something on the Laser network printer. Not fun but doable.

However, I REALLY need to get the Canon up and running wirelessly so I can print from my laptop when working in another part of the house.

Current setup: MacBook Pro upstairs with Canon printer, iMac downstairs with modem, router, and Laser printer. I decided to get the AE to upgrade to wireless-n capability and hopefully more range. Not sure I am seeing much improvement, and these printer connectivity hassles aren't helping.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. With the AEBSn as your "main" router, your Canon should only require that it is configured to join the wireless network provided by the AEBSn. This should be no different than any wireless client attempting to connect to a wireless network.

Most printers allow you to do this either by front-panel controls, via software, or a web-based interface. The last one would require that you temporarily connect to the printer by Ethernet to configure it since it would not be connected by wireless to begin with.

I promise, I've tried all that (except the ethernet connection--the printer is upstairs, the router downstairs). I've read the Canon manuals, checked settings on both AE & printer, etc. Too brain-dead today. Will have to try again tomorrow.

Canon offers a few network troubleshooting guides for this particular printer. You can find them here.

If I get an opportunity, I will download them and give them a read to see if there is anything I can help you with.
