As mentioned my itunes is painfully slow at startup. Sometimes the (as mentioned by another party) "bouncing beachball of death" does just that, bounces and nothing else. Othertimes it says its checking itunes library, now I do have a large library, but to take an hour to check? Other times it just fails to respond and I have to manually force quit and reattempt start up. Eventually I get it going but only after some very frustrating loss of time in my day. I've even gone so far as to re-install itunes and restart my Mac. Can anyone out there help me out?

    Things that can make it slow:

     

    • Huge library
    • Smart playlists and nesting folders
    • Bells and whistles such as Genius and Match

    However I don't feel my library is that huge at least not for my machine.

    I dont use Match and rarely use Genius.

    As an update to my problem:

    itunes will not even open now very unhappy. I've been going through some other threads and it appears I am not the only one to have problems with itunes, come on guys youve got a lot of loyal Apple supporters out here, FIX THIS!

    Coming here you only see the maybe 100 people who have problems, vs. the 10 million or more who don't.  There may not be anything specific to fix except the combination of whatever that is causing your particular computer not to work, vs. the completely different combination of whatever it is that is causing somebody else's computer not to work. If you want iTunes guaranteed to work, wipe your hard drive, re-install your operating system, update to the newest version of OSX an install the latest version of iTunes.  I know that isn't a solution but it's the only scenario under which iTunes is 100% guaranteed to work.  Add a single e-mail file to your computer and you're already heading into unknown territory.  Fortunately for most it works. We sympathize with your frustration.   I'm just saying maybe there isn't anything to fix, or if there is, it could be something like iTunes doesn't like files beginning with the letters ZW in a folder beginning with the letter Q and that's tough one to spot.

     

    There's many, many things we don't know about your set-up and any of them could be a problem. Are you running any third party plugins? Is your drive in good condition? I mean the directory? Did you repair permissions before and after installing iTunes?  Did you run Disk Utility's repair directory before doing any of that? How much free space do you have on your computer? Are you running iTunes off the internal drive?  How many media files do you actually have? What kind are they?  What preferences do yu have that might make iTunes try to connect to the network, or scan your files? That's just a few questions.

    Wow! You've made me feel like such a NOOB! You definately know your stuff. Guess I'll take my machine to a tech

    Heres some of my answers to your questions though:

    Not running third party plugins.

    Drive, as far as I know in great condition. Only have had the Mac for a year.

    Running itunes off internal, yes

    I have a 1TB hard drive 4GB ram am presently using half.

    I have a little over 14000 media files in itunes. About 90% have come from itunes store.

    Try this. Hold down the option key while starting iTunes. Create a new library somewhere.  Add a few test files to it and start it up a couple of times. Does it work faster? If it does then the bottleneck has something to do with your old library and or how it is set up.  If iTunes is just as slow then it is something else with the application or your computer.

    HOLY CRAP! Thanks! I just tried as you suggested and BAM! Just like that iTunes opened. I selected my second to most recent library back up and it opened. The downside is it displays 13970 items so it is missing approx 200 items. Thanks a ton! Any suggestions on how to retrieve my missing items?

    Well, got it opened again.....but....now it wont recognize or find any of my iphones or ipads. I think its definately Tech time! Thanks for the help Limnos!

    Try with a brand new library.  That will let us see if it is something either in the library or the library characteristics (14000 items, genius trying to handle those, corrupt library file stalling at some particular point) or the application itself during running.  The whole trick is starting simple and then build up in complexity until we find the stalling point or the whole thing resolves itself for no real apparent reason (been there, done that).

    Ok, this time did exactly as you suggested. OPeneed iTunes with brand new library. It opened, and quyickly too. However it froze again right at the moment when iTunes found my iPad. And now that I mention that I didn't have problems with iTunes until I purchased my iPad and synced it for the first time. I'm at a complete loss now. Could it be that iTunes, my Mac, and my iPad don't want to play well with each other?

    Hello Limnos,

    Well stayed up all night last, til 4:30 am, trying and retrying all that you suggested and..........success!

    My itunes has been running problem free and syncs up with my devices without any problems. I did as you suggested and started completely from scratch. Once the new iTunes was opened I asked it to find and import music files from in my computer. This took a little but eventually 13996 files were imported. I later found the missing files in my phones and iPad after I sync them with the new iTunes, now all 14015 files are where they should be. I also had to redownload some apps etc.    

    I want to thank you so much for all your help!

    Having said that, I do however have one more question for you Master Mac Jedi, I noticed that when the files were being imported into my new version of iTunes it was doing "copies". Therefore does that mean there are now 28000 music files in my computer? And if so, how do I or even should I remove the duplicates? I also noticed that when I was holding the alt key and opening iTunes there wre multiple libraries in existance, should I turf these as well?

    I guess thats actually three more questions.

    iTunes' default setting is to copy (not move) files to the media folders set up in your main iTunes folder.  If you want to double check you can look at an original file you copied in Finder, look at the item in iTunes, right click > show item in Finder.  You should see there are two copies in different places.  Once you're happy it seems to have done all this correctly you can delete the originals.  Of course if you back up your computer just before doing this then if something didn't happen according to plan you can always get the file off the backup.
