Sorry for the delay....Unfortunately, I don't do much on Macs but was told to just put the hard drive in and run the CD to format it. I installed the hard drive and as it boots press 'C' and choose the CD but then it just goes to a solid blue screen. I'm guessing I should have done some type of preformat on the drive. The bad thing about not doing much on Macs is I don't have a spare to do any formatting with and the old hard drive is dead. Is there any other way to format the drive by using the original CD?
Which model iMac do you have? What kind of hard drive did you install?
Do you have the original Install DVD that came with the iMac? Is this the 'CD' that you said you put into the iMac?
Insert the Install DVD into the optical drive, then pull down the Apple menu and select restart. Immediately hold down the option key and keep it held down until a menu appears listing any bootable volumes. You should see an icon representing the Install DVD that is in your optical drive. Select the Install DVD icon and then press return to attempt to boot from the Install DVD.
If the Install DVD successfully boots you should be able to pull down the Utilities menu at the top of the display after you select which language you are using. With the Utilities menu pulled down select 'Disk Utility'. You can then select the hard drive from the Disk Utility menu and click on the erase button. Depending on which version of the OS is installed on the Install DVD there may be slight differences in the steps, however you should be able to figure it out. Once you erase the hard drive and format it as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume you can quit Disk Utility and return to the Mac OS X Install DVD OS installation menu to complete the installation process.
Boot from your grey installer DVD disc 1 (hold down the C key on startup or hold down Alt/option on start and choose the installer disc).
OK the language page (if present). From the installer screen, go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility; depending on the OS version it may be in the Utilities menu or Tools menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.).
Click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need. Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for G5 and earlier) and
the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When that's completed, close DU and continue with the installation.
That's the problem. I turn the iMac on with the original install disk in and the option key held. The optical disk comes up as the only option so I select it. It then goes to a solid blue screen. I have no option of disk utilies or menus. I thought maybe the CD was bad so I got an identical CD that the customer has for an identical 20" iMac and it does the same thing. (solid blue screen only with nothing displaying at all)
Right, I think we need some more information here.
What model of iMac is it? If you're not sure exactly, what year?
What's the OS version and build number on the disc?
(Note - discs from another computer won't usually work, but you may get away with it they're the same build number)
<Afterthought; if the Mac is more than 4 or 5 years old, it may be worth having a look at the PRAM Battery>
Try the Restore DVD (disc 2), booting with the D key held down. If it loads Apple Hardware Test, run the full test in extended mode two or three times and see if any hardware problems are reported.
If that won't boot either, I'd begin to suspect the optical drive itself.
However, after checking the HD installation (again?) particularly looking for any problems with the leads, try pulling one of the RAM sticks and try again, then the other if still no joy. (when seating the RAM, make sure you feel the soft click - Apple seem to use tighter holders than yer average PC).
Another possibility, in case it is the optical drive, is to remove the HDD again and put it in a suitable enclosure, connect to another Mac and format it with Disk Utility from there, then try installing from the disc 1 inserted in the other Mac (don't try to boot from it).
Return it to the problem Mac and see if it will boot normally.
All I can think of for now. All the leads I followed up for this case were unresolved, so we're hoofing it from here.
It's a 20" A1207...so 2006ish? MAC OS version 10.4.8. I have two sets of that version CD. I've tried both sets of them as well as a external optical drive. They both give me the optical drive as a bootable option but when I select them the optical drive spins for a few minutes and I get the plain blue screen again.
I did boot with the first disk into the hardware diagnotics and everything tests fine. Oddly enough so did the original hard drive but when I tested it completely with the manufacturers cd it failed.
Reseated the memory again as well as the hard drive. Also did the NVRAM reset to no avail.
The only grey Tiger disc that will work is the one with the build no. 8N1430 on it (for 10.4.8 - they shipped with 10.4.7 in late 2006, 10.4.8 would indicate a 2007 model).
If it boots to Apple Hardware Test, it's unlikely (though not impossible) to be the logic board, or indeed the optical drive.
Must be something about the installer.
Only other suggestion I can make is to try it with a Snow Leopard retail install DVD (the model should boot Snow Leopard without problem). If you have one, that is.
You could at least complete the partition and format from there, even if the owner doesn't want SL on the Mac.
Whoa, didn't see the sns code before posting.
That's a sensor on the logic board - probably for fans, but I couldn't say which one.
That leads to the question as to whether the HD is in fact compatible, as some later model HDs have different sensor wiring.
Might be worth a check with OWC.
