The following is how I can reproduce the problem and make Safari crash every single time.
1. Log into Facebook using Safari
2. If in mobile version, switch to Desktop version
3. Navigate to your own Timeline page
4. Find a post shared previously, tap on the "comment" box/area as if you're about to comment.
5. Safari crashes immediately

Hi Red Storm. On iPhone 4S latest IOS exactly the same problem. Trying to edit photos to change the description is also problematic. It's driving me nuts as the Facebook App is so poor and doesn't display Timeline properly so Safari required. I suspect the problem may be that the Timeline page is always loading but I also have an online banking page that loads and crashes even before you try and enter anything. Whether it's a FB or Safari coding problem no idea. I would assume it must be affecting huge numbers of folk.

Hi Jelly Pocket, I can't imagine this being just a handful of minority cases. The malfunction, as you also experienced, could be openly tested on all iPhone4S'. I'm really hoping someone would step out and provode us some information on the matter.
Bump to inquire more insights.

It crashes Safari on my iPad 3rd gen. while running the desktop site, as well. I, too, run a business and manage a lot of it from my iPad. You must use Safari and the desktop version to utilize the features I need. Using Facebook as my business page is generally horrible and crashes incessantly. Often it happens when trying to comment, but it also tends to crash when trying to "show more posts" on pages utilizing timeline.

When using facebook on safari - you have the option to to view the news feed or your own page, which shows the timeline - just as it is on the desktop.

razmee209, was that a response or simply re-stating the method I, along with many others, choose to connect to and view Facebook? Please clarify. Thanks.

I'm saying you don't need to connect via the desktop b/c you can view your timeline via iphone safari. Since it crashes when you use the desktop version, I actually don't even see that option when i log in facebook using safarit.

If my initial inquiry confused you, razmee209, let me clarify.
As stated in the title of this thread, I am referring to the incapability of Safari within iPhone4S to handle certain web pages.
When browsing Facebook on mobile devices, the site defaults to deliver contents via the simplified mobile version. I have a need to view Facebook as if on a regular computer. Facebook allows its users to switch between mobile version and "desktop" version.
To reiterate, Safari crashes constantly on mobile devices (iPhone4S, iPad 3rd gen) browsing popular sites.
razmee209, if you have any of the mobile device mentioned in this thread, then please test. I am curious to learn if you are able to duplicate the problem for the interest of further discussions.

Hmmm. Well we have had an iOS update and the problem still persists on my iPhone 4S. I tried installing the Mercury browser App (worth a go) which apart from anything else supposedly can emulate Firefox, IE, Chrome and Opera as far as sites are concerned, to force desktop view. I entered a world of pain and confusion with little improvement. My conclusion is that there is something specific to the FB timeline page which is effectively ever loading which just crashes Safari and other browsers on the iPhone. What I don't understand though is why there are so few reports. Anyone who just wants to 'share' something for example cannot do it using the FB App.

Hi Red Red Storm, have you had any luck with finding out a fix for this? I hate how Apple forums seem to be the last place to turn to when you need help and no one seems to provide any assistance whatsoever.
Like I said, I'm having a similar problem. Mine isn't just Facebook however, it's Twitter and iMessages appears to be effected. I cannot use twitter or Facebook apps or their mobile optimized pages on safari. I click their bookmark, the wheel turns at the top as it begins to load, but it crashes immediately. I don't even get to see a single piece of text. It just crashes, 20 - 30 - 40 times in a row. Back to back. Then, it's normal again for a period of time.
Here is a copy of a post I made two hours ago:
Has any iPhone 4 users been experiencing more crashes than normal? I cannot open Facebook or Twitter on safari or their apps. My iPhone acts as if it's loading the page data up then the screen goes black and safari crashes. Same with their respective apps. It's as if those two pages overload my phone. I had this problem with iOS5 and it's recent update iOS 5.1.1. Today my phone crashed 23 times in a row (yes I counted!) before I gave up trying to open them.
Along with the two issues above, I noticed if I send any iMessages to anyone during the time I am experiencing the high number of crashes, they delete off my phone AND the recipients phone. They will deliver, but when I open iMessage after a crash they will have gone.
Last week I plugged my phone to iTunes and did a software upgrade and imediately started having the issue, then within about two hours of upgrading to 5.1.1 I I had to do a software restore because it was SO bad. It solved the problem for all of about NEVER lol I thought it might have something to do with the ram needed to run those apps and load those pages so I deleted ALL my images and loads of apps I don't use, that only increased my storage size. When I started experiencing these issues I had about 4gb left of my 16gb storage, after a restore and clean out I had 10gb. When I started experiencing the problems I was still on iOS 5.0 I'm now on iOS 5.1.1 and it's gotten worse and thrown the new issue of iMessages deleting that I have sent in to the mix.
Lastly, I noticed its not a constant issue. I will have a series of crashes, my phone will act incredibly slow, iMessage deletes messages etc, Facebook and Twitter don't open, in fact my phone will crawl so slowly it's pure agony, switching my phone off and the back on doesn't help, and then it will suddenly work again. Like today, I was out sat in the huge post office queue and tried to use Facebook via safari and it kept crashing, happened over and over, it was like this for about 30 minutes, then it sorted itself out again and now I am at home I can use Facebook via safari.
Come to think of it, could it be related to the fact that I was trying to load those apps and we pages up on 3G and not wifi?

Have you found any solution? I have experienced the exact same problem with 1st Gen iPad. It worked OK until late August, 2012. Only seems to be affected by Facebook timeline. Must be some bad code there.
Currently Being ModeratedSep 8, 2012 1:04 AM (in response to vaporman)
Negative vaporman. No solution has been suggested nor found to this date that remedy the crash. I wonder if this is iPhone/iPad specific problem or if the crash is also observed on non-Apple devices. The hypothesis goes that if non-Apple products can access these web sites without constant crashes, then Apple devices are architecturally defective. If those other devices also experience similar crashes, then the problem lies within the coding of these web sites.
I'll report back after testing on several non-Apple devices.

I have been having the same problem for ages... It drives me crazy and I have given up... I wonder if my 4S is faulty :( ***** as the Facebook app still does not have a 'share' option... After all don't people use Facebook mostly to share information??!

Been having this same problem all year, since timeline came around. Guaranteed every time I look at a timeline page it crashes and flashes back to my home screen. It's like timeline overwhelms my ipad1. Infuriating. I can see my newsfeed ok, but if I actually want to click and read something, crash. I, too, look at Facebook via Safari using the "full" or desktop view. I don't like mobile, and I really don't like the app on the iPad. Guess I'm doomed, right?
