Does a sim free iPhone lock to the first sim installed or can I swap carriers.

    No.

An officially unlocked iPhone is unlocked from the start.

Hi I have a problem with my iphone.  It came from the Apple shop in the uk but when I went abroad and tried to put another sim in, it would not register the new sim. I understand that if I had got it from a carrier then it would have been locked to them but can you tell me why I have this problem when it is supposedly an unlocked Apple phone.  I would be grateful of any help.

Thanks for the reply about the phone locking to the first sim card but can you tell me what apple said to do about it.  As I am abroad for quite a lot of the time its really frustrating not been able to use my iphone.  Thanks.

    I Phone 5.

I have Just spoken to apple about changing over sim cards in a UK purchased sim free phone.

Yes your  I phone does lock to the first sim you use.

But you can unlock it and use another sim,  You have to plug it into I tunes, then do a back up.

Then do a restore and it will be unlocked as the day you recived it, so you can now use another sim card.

This is a real con, and im not happy about it either.

As the only reason I purchsed it from apple was to be sim free, and just change the sim as and when I want to.

Apple need to sort this out, as its a con.

Better of buying an I phone locked to a net work from else where much cheaper, then pay the difference for the offical aftermarket unlock, which lets you change sims as and when you want to.

Apple have stiched us all up again.

You can also try and back up your phone via I cloud, then try restore from I cloud, this should do the same thing and restore your phone so that you can use a different sim card while abroad.

That ONLY happens with phones purchased from Carphone warehouse. The only source for fully unlocked phones in the UK is Apple. Either an Apple store, or on-line.
