Restart the iPad (hold the Home and Sleep buttons until the Apple logo appears.
This sometimes happens if the download of the updates gets interrupted.
If that doesn't work, downalod the updates via iTunes, and sync the iPad to iTunes.
In either case, you don't lose the app data

Restarting the iPad did not work, however, updating apps in iTunes then sync as you suggested did work. Thx much.
