Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
There are multiple steps to connect to the internet successfully.
Have you tried the Assist Me button at the bottom of, Diagnostics in , System Preferences, Internet & Wireless, Network?
Then click 'Diagnostics':
Diagnostics will give you a status display, showing you where the possible trouble lies with yellow or red 'LED' indicators. Yours likely looks like this at the moment:
1. AirPort: The physical hardware in your computer to transmit and receive WiFi signals that Apple calls "AirPort" (This is working, because you've connected to your WiFi router.)
2. AirPort Settings: Your AirPort software and security settings controlling the wireless connection between your computer and your WiFi router. (This is working, because you've connected to your WiFi router.)
3. Network Settings: (Likely trouble point.) The software and security settings on your computer controlling your 'wired' connection through your WiFi router to your (DSL or Cable) modem to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
4. ISP: Your 'wired' connection thorough your devices (router, modem, and physical wiring or cable) to your Internet Service Provider.
5. Internet: Your ISP's 'wired' connection to the Internet backbone.
6. Server: The server(s) hosting your intended internet destination (e.g. http://discussions.apple.com)
(When everything is working properly, all indicators are green.)

According to your description, teh bars indicate that you connect to the wireless router, not that you effectively connect to the net. You need to set it or, if correctly set, it may mean that your internet provider has a failure in internet connection.
