I bought an iPad 3 online a couple of weeks ago and I had the photosync issue that many have had, but I also had an issue that if I deleted any data (photos or videos etc) it didn't delete the data and just shifted it into "other". If I did a soft reset then the memory freed up. The screen also had a brownish colour to it so I took it back.

The 2nd iPad had no sync issues, but had a brown screen again, making the whites look sepia (see my other thread). So this went back too.

Onto my 3rd iPad and at first everything seemed great. The screen was/is superb and I didn't have any sync/memory issues until last night. The first thing that happened was that the iPad would crach and disconnect from the server when downloading/updating apps. This also caused safari to stop working, and any apps that needed internet/wificonnection. It's not the same wifi issue as a lot of people are getting as the actual wifi connection was strong, it just wouldn't connect to the servers. I've since discovered that it only happens when downloading/updating large apps. The ones I've had trouble with have been 200+MB. Ones under 10MB have no issue at all.

Then this morning I've connected the iPad to iTunes and the memory is virtually full with nearly 2GB being taken up by other again. I deleted all content off my iPAd and did a soft reset but it still showed nearly 2GB data taken up by other. I did a full restore which got rid of the data in other, but as soon as I restored from backup the data in other was back again.

I'm going to try doing a full restore again but this time setting up as a new device and see how I get on (I didn't have time this morning as had to get to work). Needless to say I'm so disappointed. I've got a feeling that I'm going to have to take this iPad back too but I'm very reluctant to as I don't want to have a bad screen again. The screen is very important to me, and in fact is why I didn't buy the iPad 2 and been waiting 18 months for a retina display. I'm a big apple fan, and have the iphone, Macbook pro and Ipod nano too, but this has really put me off the iPad :-(

Setting it up as new device without using the latest backup should help, seems your backup contained corrupt files causing this problem.

How to back up your data and set up as a new device

You're probably right, but it's annoying nonetheless. I don't have issues with my other iDevices, nor have I had with previous idevices. I do hope Apple provides a solution, whether it's an iPad issue or iPad/itunes compatibility issue, as it's annoying that everytime I want to add/delete items I have to restore it. And I really don't understand the app download/update issue. I guess I could try updating via iTunes first then syncing the iPad, but it's a little bit irritating and I shouldn't have to do it. Consumers shouldn't be having to do workarounds to fix flaws in sofware/hardware.

So I did a full reset and set up as a new iPad. As thought it got rid of the data in "other". All was working fine until this morning when I deleted an app. Now my photo data has shifted to other. However, the amount of total data usage has stayed the same this time as it has reduced the usage in photo. Whilst this is not ideal, I can't see it really being an issue as it's not using any extra memory, just shifting where the memory is stored. As far as I can tell, all photos show and are where they are supposed to be on the actual iPad. Still, I hope there's a fix soon and it works as it's supposed to.

If your "Other" section does not grow above 1GB, you don't need to restore again. This is the normal size needed by the iOS.

Other is now using approx 1.7GB. Before I removed the app photos was showing approx 3.6GB and other 0.5GB. I deleted the app and photos went from 3.6 to 2.4GB, and other went from 0.5 to 1.7GB. So it's as though 1.2GB has shifted from photo to other. I'm wondering whether is has actually shifted or whether iTunes/iPad is reading it wrong? I've not found that any photos are missing. Is there a way to show how many photos there actually is on the iPad like there is on the iphone? When I go to photos on the iphone there's a folder named photo library that has all photos in it and displays the actual number of photos.

I just checked my iPad3, removing my photos and adding them back changed the "Other" while the sync was going on, but after the process was finished, the size was back to normal again, which is 1.4GB at the moment.

Did you check if some of the photos are damaged? If iTunes can't read data, it will put it into the "Other" section.

If you go to Settings/Info, you can see the actual number of photos on your iPad listed.

I have no "info" in settings. Do you mean settings>general>usage?

If so photos doesn't appear here which is odd, as video and music do, as well as all the apps

My "other" does not revert back after syncing. Is there a way to analyse for corrupt files? The strange thing is the same photos sync fine on my iPhone without going into other. It's times like this I wish you could access the ipad files/folders etc via your PC, rather than just being able to syn through iTunes.

    Sorry, it's Settings/General/About.

The name, network, provider, music, videos, photos, apps... are listed right in this section.

Ok thanks. I'll check that after the FA Cup final (Hope Liverpool play better, they've been awful).

How do I check my files to see if they're corrupt?

    Good luck for the "Reds"

Try to open a couple of pictures or see if you can find missing ones, if you compare the selection to the one on your phone.

Well it was a much better performance 2nd half but not a great result.

I'll see if I have the patience to go through each pic one by one, but it doesn't make sense to me that if a file is corrupt why it would sync with one device and not another. All the pics open on my laptop though.

The photos for the new iPad are being optimized for the retina display during the sync process. So it might be that some of those photos are damaged during the sync. Can you try another USB cable?

The iphone has retina as well, but I guess the optimisation process is still different for the 2 devices? Using a different cable doesn't make any difference. I'll guess I'll just put up with it until Apple come up with a fix. Like I said before, at least this time it's not stealing any memory, just shifting it.
