Got it for free, now I know why.

Would like to fix it to add to my collection of Apple products.

Black screen and no response to on-off button.

Pluged in to charger, same, nothing.

Pluged in to Windows - iTunes, tries to restore but fails, error code 2009 (2006 with the Mac).

Any suggestions welcome.

iPod touch, Windows Vista

Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on): If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software.

    OK, thanks for the suggestion.

    Tried it, no change.

Charged it for 12 hours still no sign of life.

The screen is still black, wondering if the battery is down to 0 and not a software/restore issue.

Could be the battery or some other hardware problem. Make and appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and hear what they say. It is free except for your time.

Sounds like a challenge, and I like challenges....

iTunes sees the device so we know its not totally dead.

Does iTunes show the battery being charged?

Does Windows add the device to My Computer?

Did you get the device history from your friend?  Could be revealing....

    Hi Cliftonfromrichmond,

Appreciate your interest, I like a challeng too.

iTunes only keeps asking if I want to reset the iPod.

Windows did add it as a device.

    No history available.

The unit looks like new. What I really need to know if its worth bringing it to the repair depot and paying the diagnostic fee of $25.00.

Not handy enough to open it up on my own, understand the screen is glued in on this model and takes some skill to open it up to replace the battery (if that is the problem).

Actually the digitizer screen and the plastic bezel snap into place.  The screen is glued to the bezel.  To get the digitizer asssembly (that is the proper name) out you have to insert  "special" tools between the plastic bezel and the metal case and unlock some tabs.  Then you can lift the whole thing out.  There are numerous How-To guides on the 'Net, several of which are multi-media....

With the excpetion of the digitizer cable, the electrical connections are locking friction connectors and ribbon cables.  The cable for the digitizer is rather wimpy, so caution is advised.  The cable is at the top of the assembly so you must lift the digitizer from the Home button end...  The connecton is a plug and socket arrangement, and because the cable is rather short, reconnecting can be a little tedious...

Of special not is the digitizer glass.  It is VERY fragile, and when it breaks it makes lots of small sharp pieces....

Also notworthy is the battery is held in place with some very thin double-sided tape.  If you get that far some prying will be required....

Finally, most replacement parts are fairly inexpensive.  At last check a battery averaged $9.00, a new digitizer was around $12.00, and a headphone jack was under $10.00...

FWIW,  I have successfully revived a 2nd gen Touch, a 5th Gen Ipod Video, and a 30gig Zune....  I have one more 5th Gen Video that needs some help, but I'm in no hurry.....

    Thanks,

Great news, sounds like a trip to the Apple store to get some free diagnostics and then decide if I will takle the job or send out to service.  Didn't want to spend the money and effort on replacing the battery if it needed some other component.  Good to hear that instructions are available if required.  Recently replaced a battery on an iPod G3 to find out that the system board was shorted out.  So I am treading carefuly on this one.

Thanks for your advice, will be back for more.

Thanks for your advice, went to the store and they replaced the unit under warranty???

I was blown away, after dealing with other hardware companies I expected the worse and tried to do it on my own.
