I had to format my MBP and hence took a complete backup of my machine. Now I'd like to retrieve ONLY the Bookmarks from the backup that exists on my external HD that was backed up using Time Machine. Is there a way I can do that?

To extend this original question, I want to retrieve only selected items from the backup viz. Only my data Only some applications, Only the text written in sticky notes in widgets, Only data in my Address book etc. Is it possible to do so?

Thanks in advance.

Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:

    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist

A Finder window will open with an item selected. Enter Time Machine and restore the item.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.

Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:

    ls -l ~/Library/Safari

Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

Do as in my first response, but enter this in the Go to Folder dialog:

    ~/Library/Safari

Restore the file named Bookmarks.plist in your backups.

That's what you want. Don't copy anything from the backup volume in the Finder. Use the time-travel interface. If you ever backed up the Bookmarks file, it's in your snapshots.

That's because you formatted the boot volume. It's not really the same volume you backed up.

Hi Linc. I just did a clean install of Mac OS Lion and I've run into the same problem. From reading this thread I've managed to un-hide the Bookmarks.plist file on my HDD. But when I go into the time travel interface (with it still highlighted in Finder) it is still not showing up there. Previous backups were done on Snow Leopord. Any ideas?
