Hi WishMeAway! You can simply disable iMessage through your settings. Open up your Settings.app, go to Messages. Switch the lever for iMessage to off.
When disabling iMessage, your phone will use short message service (SMS) as standard. If you got a good carrier plan and a lot of bandwidth I don't see any reason to turn iMessage off.
Hope this helps you out.

hi wishmeaway..just a curious question. why wouldnt you use a FREE service like imessage?
its just the same as sending an sms, they only difference is its free when sending to another person who has an iphone with 5.0.1 and upwards software.

Have had lots of problems with imessage arriving late or not at all, especially in foreign countries. I would rather pay for an SMS and be confident it will arrive

It is helpful to disable it when you have a SIM inserted without a data plan. imessage uses data as far as I can tell and that gets very expensive quickly as I noted when I inserted my vodafone.it sim into my newly unlocked 3gs in the US.
