The default Print icon in the MS Office toolbar is called Print One Copy and it bypasses any settings you make in the printer driver (you will notice that the print dialog does not appear when this Print icon is used). With File > Print working correctly I would guess that the document you have created is larger than the size of paper being used in the printer and thus any scaling set in the driver to reduce the size is not being invoked. You can check the document size via File > Page Setup.
If the Page Setup is correct then I am not sure what else it could be. I have not seen this symptom when using Word on the Mac and using this Print icon. While not a solution, there is a workaroud and that is to change the Print icon function from Print One Copy to Print so that the print dialog appears - thus the same as using File > Print. I can provide this instruction if you want to try this.
