If you restore as new, ALL data will be erased from your phone...ALL.

thanks, I understand though that once that has been done I can transfer contacts and so on back over from icloud. Is this true? I can also re download all of my apps. which I am fine to do.
It's the text messages though that I'm unsure of.

You can sync all of your content back to your phone. Your SMS's will be gone. The ONLY way to restore them is from backup, but you've been advised not to do so.

ok, well that is what I thought.
Does anyone know of any workaround to this? I can't imagine I'm the only person that has wanted to do a new resh restore and then be able to add text mesages back on afterwards?

Why don't you do this: When you restore your phone, a backup will be created. This backup will be time/date stamped, and not overwritten. Sync your content back to your phone. Use the phone to make sure all is working properly. If so, restore from the backup that was created when you restored as new. See if the issues you had are still gone.

HI, ok so just to be clear what you are suggetsing is to back up my phone then restore from new. Then sync all my contacts and so on back over to my phone (but sadly not my text messages)
Then if my software issue seems to be fixed restore phone again but this time do it from the last back up that I made?
Is that what you meant?
I'm happy to try that but surely it still means that I am just replacing the sofware with my saved and possibly corrupt version again?

That's exactly what I'm suggesting. When you restore as new, a fresh copy of the iOS will be installed on your phone. If all is working properly, then restore from backup. If things are still working fine, you're good to go. If not, just restore as new again, but there is a very good chance you won't have any issues.

Hi, welll I will give that a go. I must admit though, I was hoping to find a solution that didn't involve me having to restore from any back up at all. I'm really quite keen to start from new. If anyone has worked out a way of doing this and still being able to rransfer your saved text messages back onto the 'new' phone that would be awesome!

How can I restore my contacts only (without any software glitches) from icloud after I restore as new phone?

If you have an iCloud account which provides syncing contacts over the air with your iCloud online address book, your contacts should be available in your iCloud online address book. All you need to do is turn Contacts on for over the air syncing with your iCloud account and your iCloud contacts will be restored.
Besides that, your contacts should be avaialble on your computer as well. Not a good idea to depend on the iPhone or any cell phone alone for such important data.
