You could try resetting the PMU:

Since I still have a little battery power left I may try resetting the PMU, but I'm not sure how that will get electrical power to the computer. I've been reading other posts and seeing scary-and-expensive things like a bad DC In Board, and solder joints stressed from plugging the power adaptor in and out.
I will look over the resetting PMU information (I'm pretty sure I have it printed out at home). Thank you for replying.

Yes, if resetting the PMU doesn't work, it does sound like the DC-in board has failed.
It is not an easy repair (especially for someone who describes herself as "NonTech."
Not exactly cheap, either:

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me (and countless others).
The good news for me is that I had two bad power cords. The power cord I was using went bad, I dug out my "spare" power cord, which didn't work, and I assumed the worst. But a working power cord fixed the problem. That's a great relief for me, but I'm rather embarassed to have to 'fess up that I assumed that two non-working power cords meant I had a serious problem.
I'll get a new back up power cord just in case the one I'm using goes bad.

I always keep a spare power cord on hand. They do have an annoying habit of failing, and I never want to be without one.
Thanks for posting back and letting us know what the problem was.

Dang! For a week the new power cord fixed my problem, now that working cord was "killed off" and I'm back to losing power while the power cord is plugged in.
This is not good, and I'm thinking it might cost less to get a "new" used laptop than to have someone repair this one. (I'm probably not up to tackling really difficult problems.)
Since this one is maked as solved I better start a new post and ask advice.
