A lot of recent "security" changes have been impletmented recently, so the above information may no longer apply. Read it and make sure you're doing everything properly.

Thanks! Well, that will teach me to READ ALL the options. As I didn't see NONE for payment when I setup my account. Now I have 3 or 4 apple accounts :-) Just came back after over 2 years.

The steps for getting the None option only apply for creating a new Apple ID and iTunes/Mac App Store account. If you try the steps with an existing Apple ID the None option does not usually appear.'09 Mac mini, iPad 2, iPhone 4S, Mac OS X (10.7.3), iOS (5.0.1) Mac fanboi since 1984!
