I am operating in Mac 10.5.8 and was wondering do I need to upgrade to 10.6 and then to 10.7 Lion or can I skip a step?

I am currently on the operating system 10.5.8 and was told that I have to go and buy the software for 10.6 as I cannot download it, and then download 10.7 Lion so that I am on the new operating system. Is this true or any recommendations?

You must first buy Snow Leopard for $29: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A

You can't skip any steps. Snow Leopard is a prerequisite for Lion since it includes the App Store.

Then, purchase and install Lion from the Mac App Store. Lion costs 99¢ more than Snow Leopard.

Make sure your system meets the requirements for Lion:

    System Requirements

    • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    • 2GB of memory
    • OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)

The specified 2 GB minimum is barely adequate. Lion will run in 2 GB but you won't like it. 4 GB is a more realistic minimum.

If you purchase the Apple USB Lion flash drive installer - $69.00 - at your local Apple Store then you can erase the hard drive and install Lion directly. Or you can purchase the Snow Leopard DVD from the Apple Store Online - $29.00, install and update to 10.6.8. Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and purchase and download Lion - $30.00.

Be sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements:

    Lion System Requirements

    • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    • 2GB of memory
    • OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    • 7GB of available space
    • Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
