Are you sure you did download the entire message? The built-in media player (QucikTime) should play WAV files and no third-party apps should be required.
Nevertheless, if you in no way can make it work, let me know and I compile a full list of WAV-capable third-party players (there are a lot of them).

Are you sure? I do think ALL iOS devices support WAV files. I couldn't test this right now on the iPad 2 (it's at home), but both my iPad 3 and iPhone 3G S plays WAV files I've sent myself via e-mail just fine. I don't think the iPad 2 would be an exception.
