I have a late 2008 MBPro and with software I've spent well over $3500.00 on it, not to mention all of the other Apple products we own. (I don't even want to add it up!) Since installing Lion and switching to iCloud my MBPro has been a mess!!!

It started the with the same symptoms other people have complained of. Certificates marked untrusted started showing up. Then the iCloud keys started multiplying. Then I couldn't wake my MBPro from sleep. If I dared close the top, it took a long time for the spinning wheel to stop and the MBPro to start, until pretty rapidly, it wouldn't start at all. I had to cold boot it to get it to work whether I was starting up from sleep or having turned it off altogether.

I reformatted and reinstalled Lion, set iCloud back up from scratch. Quickly the first symptoms started showing, and this time around I suddenly was not allowed to save my own documents and had to input the admin password for every change I made. Then it still didn't want to let me save so I had to keep making duplicates to save! After that, websites I have accounts for started rejecting my entire MBPro, completely. Not all of them, but increasingly numbers of them. Finally, the entire machine went belly up and I couldn't even start it from the original operating system disk to reformat it again!

Finally one command did work so I could reformat, but it wouldn't let me install anything but Lion. (I wanted to go back to Snow Leopard). The only choice it gave me was Lion and it was that or a blank screen, so I went with it, again. Now it is working, but sure enough, the problems are already creeping in, and now my spouse's MBPro, purchased a few weeks after mine, is starting to have the same problems. (He installed Lion later than I did. Note: I waited a few months before I made the switch to Lion in order to avoid unnecessary bug hassles.)

I'd been planning on buying a new MBPro with a larger screen and the top specifications, which will run me about $3600.00, and I would have done so by now if it were not for all of these problems. The entire reason for switching from Microsoft/Windows in the first place was that I was so sick and tired of spending inordinate amounts of time fixing problems and having to reformat three times a year. I don't know whether it is only Lion or Lion and iCloud, only now I am back to life as I knew it with Windows, but I've paid a Heck of A Lot More for the agony. I am a Very unhappy customer.

I forgot to add that some programs, especially Aperture, have become a pain to use too. Slow, choppy, freezing, and crashing.

This issue seems to be solved in the latest 10.7.4 developer seed. The release notes states that one of the focus areas is Graphics, and after I inspected the package manually with Pacifist, I indeed found updated Graphics Drivers + Power Management Kexts for all the graphic cards.

    @nadeem97

Are you in a mid-2010 MacBook Pro? How tests freezing issue is going so far.

    Thanks for the information.

Do you also know if this issue is still present in OS X Mountain Lion?

My laptop is one of the very unlucky ones described in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088. After a long 4 months fight with apple I got it repaired for free back in early January this year. This issue completely went away (which was related to the Nvidia GPU). Three months later this issue, which is freezing on login screen, or very (extremely) rarely during using the computer strated happening. Tracking down the issue it appeared that the issue is related to the Intel GPU in the laptop.

I've completely disabled it using the "Don't Auto switch graphics switch" and it was gone. But I knew it is not a reliable solution, since I do count on the intel GPU to save battery when my Laptop is not plugged in.

10.7.4 has fixed the issue so far, for me. Will report otherwise if it happens. I do believe it is a software issue, unlike the Nvidia one, which was faulty logicboards.

    Hope I helped.

    Hi!

My Laptop for now freezes at login, is you take a little long to put the password it freezes, and some times, not always, it gives the Kernel panic and i need to shut it down. and restart again.

Another thing, i was i contact with apple, and they testes my computes in one Apple certified center, and after i send some logs that they asked me to do and send and they didn't find any thing. But i'm using the nvidia GT 330M and my computer was bought in october 2010 directly to the Apple website with some modifications, so it was build in October i guess!

The macbook sometimes freezes during the day, but once in month maybe.

What do you think that i must do? they don't find nothing, neither in the logs or in the ACC!

    Thanks for the help!

Nadeem: re. 10.4.7, this is very reassuring news. Thanks.

I sounds like they actually know what the problems are, and have created a fix.

I just wish they could push the fix through the Software Update pipeline, so that we don't need to reinstall Snow Leopard while we wait.

Hi David, I like the information from Nadeem97, just before your own post. It sounds like the the public release of 10.7.x will fix our MacBookPro (and other Macs') problems. You can probably wait for the release, later this (Northern Hemisphere) Summer. Or try "the kext fix" documented several times on this discussion thread.

Just a short post to say I am yet another MBP 6.2 (mid 2010) user suffering from login screen freezes. Apple care was really nice and admitted that there was an issue. They recommended using full disk encryption, since the login screen then appears at an earlier stage. I am so much hoping for 10.7.4!

    >HOORAY!!! This solved the problem! Here are the steps I took:

    >1. Edit the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext/Contents/Info.plis t file >according to the values for the 6,2 MacBookPro in the 10.6.8 version of the same file using TextWrangler (as in >image in my previous post).

    >2. Move the extension file to the trash and reboot in safe mode (shift key down) to flush the extension cache.

    >3. Move the extension file from the trash back to its original place (you'll need to authenticate)

    >4. Reboot...and take AS LONG AS YOU LIKE to type your username/password.

I just want to say thank you.  This immediately fixed my problem with Lion on the mid-2010 macbook pro.

I wanted a "clean" install of lion on a new SSD.  What a mistake that was!

I should have done an upgrade and would have had no issues.

Lucky I hadn't reused the old 10.6.8 drive and I just copied the file from the old install to the lion install (while in safe mode) rebooted and BAM! instantly fixed it.

Look at page 47 of this thread for more details and orignal info on this fix.

    YEAH!

Editing System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext/Contents/Info.plist (as described above / page 47 several times) seems to work for me too!!!

Nadeem97: how long does it ususlly take for a "seed release" of an update to be released to the Software Update pipeline?

It will be good to see that The Hungry but crippled Lion is not going to gobble up the silly OSXtrich before it pulls its head out of the sand,
