My volume keys seem to have taken on other functions. F11 takes me back to the desktop. F12 brings up the dashboard. F10 doesn't turn on the audio either. This started after a force quit when I could not shut down a streaming video. Why can't I turn on my volume anymore?

Interesting, as I got the same problem when I get my MacBook back from the Apple Store after a repair. The Function keys are no longer mapped to the labels on the function keys. F3 and F4 are labeled as expose - all windows, and Dashboard, respectively, but they are now mute and lower volume. The Expose functions are now mapped to F9, F10 and F11, which are labeled on the keys themselves as Next song, Mute and Lower volume, respectively.

I assumed that it was a hardware issue, as it started immediately after the repair, but perhaps it isn't. Any help that would save me a trip back to the Apple Store would be appreciated.

Look in System Preferences, Keyboard, and Keyboard Shortcuts.

In Keyboard, is the box to '*Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys*' checked or unchecked?
In Keyboard Shortcuts, are there warnings (yellow triangles?) You may need to 'Restore Defaults'

(I'm on OS X 10.6.x so the wording might be different in OS X 10.5.x)

I just got a new Macbook Pro i7, 10.6.6, and my function keys don't work right either - at least not as I am used to. How do I make F11 show the desktop? On my other Macs, pressing F11, or maybe fn-F11, reveals the desktop.

I have been to the keyboard preferences and tried everything there I could think of. There is an instruction about double-clicking on what you want and hitting a key, but that doesn't work. Nothing works.
several imacs, powerbooks, etc., Mac OS X (10.6.6), also use 10.4.11, Linux

I had the problem of the function keys f10-f12 performing expose functions (return to desktop etc.) rather than the volume functions. Two steps fixed this: 1) kostby's advice (i.e. System Preferences, Keyboard, uncheck the box '*Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys*'.) 2) Reset the PRAM.
