I have the same issue. Happend in 10.6 and conitnued to happen in 10.7. The Genius bar was no help. From reading what everyone is writing, I'm afraid to have the logic board replaced, sounds like I'm just as likely to have worse issues. Given the length of time this has been happening, is Apple not working on a solution?

What do you mean by "is Apple not working on a solution"???? Is it not clear after almost 180 pages of discussions that this is a hardware issue and that Apple's final response to it is to grant a new logic board per their KB TS4088 to those who qualify? What else are they supposed to be "working on"?
I got my MLB replaced twice and it solved the issue for good. Of course it was a little of a hassle having to go through the process twice, but, hey, **** happens in manufacturing and it's just a matter of probability! I suggest that if you qualify for a replacement, that you start this as soon as possible, before Apple's coverage for this issue expires and you are left with a defective computer, rather than expecting for "a solution" that is already there for the problem this thread discusses.

I have followed this thread from the beginning, same profile as everyone, except I'm on Snow Leopard, mid-2010 mbp with not-so-random apple black screen of death. Been surviving from june 2011 with gfxCardStatus, and crossing fingers when using my external monitor. I'm way past anger.
I did all the usual routines when it started, re-install system, resetting pram, updatd etc... and as you all know, it didn't change anything. I knew the only thing to do was to have it repaired but I couldn't afford the time without machine.
I finally went and made good use of the extended guarantee. I first called apple support and explained the situation. They opened a file and sent me to a local premium reseller (no apple store less than 100 kil. away).
There I showed a folder with copy-pasted text files from the last 4 months crash logs (about 6 a week, I had a lot of them).
They took my mbp for three days (gasp). They ran the tests and changed my logic board.
When I took back the mbp, first strange thing to happen was that the keys 3-e-d-c wouldn't work for some time. Then I had a freeze with graphic artifacts on the screen saver. Next day, using Firefox, the finder went bezerk all of a sudden, a freeze with negative colors on the finder's windows and artifacts on the desktop picture...
I took a photo of this, and brought back the mbp. They took it again, three more days (re-gasp), and changed the logic board for the second time.
The people at the shop were quite understanding, I didn't have to fight. The previous phone call to apple support, the collected crash logs and the final picture helped, I guess.
It's been two days, too early to feel safe, as experience shows. Still, no gfxCardStatus and no problem so far. I will update to Lion before the guarantee expires though, because I feel it might be a tad bumpy.

After my 2nd Logic board replacement, it seems like i might have this problem solved. See my posts above (page 172) where I was haveing terrible freeze issues even after 1st logic board swap. I went back to the store and showed them my kernel panics again and they ordered another logic board and I got my mbp mid-2010 core i7 back after they changed the logic board this second time. I have been using for almost 2 days now with no problem so far, i hope this stays this way.
My suggestion will be to go ask for logic board replacement asap and if that does not solve the problem, chances are you got a faulty motherboard the second time as well, so ask for it to be replaced again till you get your problem solved. There are tens of cases in this thread alone where folks have said they had to replace the logic board twice and Apple was indeed willing to do that. DO IT BEFORE YOUR 2 YEAR DATE FROM PURCHASE RUNS OUT.

I have my Macbookpro mid 2010 15 inch now at the Apple Premium Reseller for the 3th time because of this issue. First time mid 2011, they replaced the LB. Second time early this year, they installed a graphic firmware update, 3 days later the problem reoccured, brought it back again. Now I am still waiting for some answer what they do next. I think they replace the LB again. Thankfully they always give me some spare MacBookPro 13 inch to work while they repair mine.
What I am worried about, when following this discussion along, is that I am not very confident with the idea that Apple produces so much broken LBs. I mean, how high is the probability that people that get a broken LB will get a broken LB AGAIN? If you had some probability and statistics in univerity/school you will know that this should be very low. Having a large discussion of about 180 pages on some issue with those computers is understandable because there are a lot of them produced and sold to people but then having so much people where the problem reoccurs is not reasonable. Do they just swap those broken LBs altogether within the broken LB customer pool? Something must be very wrong here. Or the issue is not related to the LB at all. Maybe some internal parts of exactly that computer cause the LB to fail after some time. Maybe the internal case design has issues... or some other hardware part.
Who also starts to think in this direction?

thanks heaps just as well i got my extended warranty then. off to the apple store i go. seriouly thank you so much , also have people tried to delete the com.apple.powermanagement.plist in the system configuration folder ????? according to apple if u delete it it creates a new powermanagement file and resets so all i did was open all the apps i possibally could to give the file a starting point. its worked so far for me..

I have a question for those that have had their logic boards replaced either via AppleCare or the service bulletin.
For those of you who have had to have more than one logic board replaced, what was the part number on the logic board?
Same question for those who have had no problems since a replacement?
I have my mid-2010 in at a local approved repair shop today (and over the weekend). Got a clear FAILED message on the logic board test, having the board replaced at no cost to me outside of AppleCare. After doing a lot of digging over the weekend I still have not gotten a clear answer if there was an update or revision to the logic boards in our MacBooks to keep this problem from happening again.
I have found two part numbers for logic boards for the 2.66 i7 mid 2010-
I called my repair center and confirmed that the part number on the logic board going into the machine is 661-5480. They say they put in the part Apple sends them.
Anyone with any information or who has tried to piece together if there was a revision or update to our faulty logic boards please chime in!

There is no way for me to tell which logic board part number went in the first time and then the second time. it does not show up in the repair receipt from Apple. If they put in the 661-5480 part number for you now, did you have the other one previously?
There has to be a software/terminal way to find out the current part number for the logic board, anybody?

look that means that you download a small virus that make your screen flash don't be afraid this virus don't do anything. And try to download an antivirus and deleted it and everything will work fine. That happend to me and now my macbook work like a charm

I want to add, for those of you reluctant to go for the logic board swap because of the hassle, that you don't have to reinstall the system, not even use Time Machine or whatever, because the system - hosted in the HD - is untouched in the process.
I know, this is basic knowledge, but I didn't really think it over before and was afraid I would have to reinstall everything - never a good thing in the middle of a workflow. None of that. Swap that faulty crap and back on track. Twice or more - but the quickest the best.
Should have done it way before.

I'll see if I can find out the part number on the first logic board. My gut feeling is that the higher numbered logic board is the revised/fixed board and the lower is the old/fault prone board. Again, for those of you who had a second faulty board installed, were you able to produce a BSOD right away? Or did It happen again after some time?

I don't think there's a logic board revision specifically for this issue, though there may well be an unrelated change. The problem appears to be that the nVidia silicon isn't behaving as designed, though it's interesting that the Snow Leopard drivers didn't trigger the issue which happened reliably for me under Lion. Either an nVidia revision addressed the issue or it's a manufacturing tollerance issue that causes some chips to fail and others to be okay. The only way to know for certain is to get the board replaced and see whether that solves the problem or not. If it doesn't, be patient but firm about Apple's policy that this is a known problem they've committed to resolve.
My replacement board didn't solve the problem as I was able to reproduce it the same day I got the machine back. More than once. Instead of trying again they offered to replace mine with another model, though that was entirely at their discretion and they aren't really obliged to do so.

It didn't occur right away but after approx. 9 month after the 1st LB replacement.
Tomorrow I will pick up my computer after the 2nd LB replacement as they called me today.
I did backup the entire system information status before the 2nd replacement so I can tell you tomorrow if they really exchanged the LB (if the new one has another hardware ID) and also the LB revision if I find it in the exported system information file.

The ony thing that works for me is downloading gfxCardstatus and running it on "Integrated only". Problem of course is that I can't run my computer properly since the graphics are very bad but at least no black screens.
There is some conflict with the Nvidia GT 330M.
I'm using Snow Leopard (mid 2010, 15" MBP) but this problem has continously been getting worse, despite released "fixes".
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
