How can I run AHT on my iMAC 21.5 inch, MID 2011 and Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50)? There were no DVDs in the package, no restart key-stroke combination connected to internet-aht, no aht is included in the package I bought and downloaded from Apstore.

One of the 4 rear USB ports seems to be death from the very first moment. I would like to use the AHT to see if this is some SW misconfiguration or is it a HW problem.

Apple Hardware Test should already be installed on your hard drive as long as it hasn't been erased.

In order to launch the Apple Hardware Test power on your iMac while holding down the D key. If AHT is present on your system it will launch. If it's not present on your system then try holding down the option and D keys in order to load it from the internet. You should make sure that you have downloaded and installed all available software and firmware updates first though.

Following the instruction above (and all other instructions around in many MAC boards, nothing else happend as the option of recovery from my recovery partition or from TM backup. AHT semms not to be present and Internet access also doesn't show up.

Can you confirm that you have no software and firmware updates available if you select the Software Updates option from the Apple Menu? In order for it to work you need to have the update whose link is below installed. According to the documention your Boot ROM version needs to be IM121.0047.B1D. You can check your current version of the BootROM by pulling down the Apple Menu and selecting 'About this Mac', then click on the More Info button. Once the 'About this Mac' window opens, click on the System Report button. In the Hardware Overview section you should see the BootROM version for your system listed.

When I hold down the option and D keys on my Mid 2011 iMac I get a spinning globe on a grey screen with the words 'Starting internet recovery. This may take a while.' below it. After a few minutes the Apple Hardware Test loaded.

    The iMAC info says: IM121.0047.B1F

Is this not even newer than IM121.0047.B1D?

Downloaded package installer says: This software is not supported on your system.

You are correct, you have the most current bootrom version. As long as you have a working internet connection you should have been able to load the Apple Hardware Test by holding down the option and D keys. The only other suggestion I can make is to make sure that you press and hold the option and D keys immeidately after powering on your system, and make sure it is before the grey screen appears.

If you are having problems with one of the USB ports then you may want to contact Apple or take your system into a service provider for repair. You can find contact information for Apple here:

Well, I should have been able to but I am simply not. And that makes me a little confused about iMAC after a years working with Windows. The :missing: USB is not worth to stay a couple of weeks without computer. I'll solve it by a HUB if necessary. But this impossibility to connect to AHT nerves me too.

Here are a couple of additional suggestions, but after these I unfortunately have run out of suggestions for you.

Are you using one of the current Apple USB or wireless Apple keyboards? If you are using an older Apple or a 3rd party keyboard then it's possible your system is not recognizing the key presses required to run AHT.

Another way to verify the USB ports on your iMac is to use the built in 'System Profiler' feature of Mac OS X. First, plug in a USB device to the suspect USB port, then pull down the Apple menu and select 'About this Mac'. When the 'About this Mac' window opens click on the 'More Info...' button, then click on the 'System Report...' button. Once the system profiler window open click on 'USB' in the Hardware column on the left side to display your USB device tree. You should see a list of all the USB devices that are attached to your system including the FaceTime camera, SD card reader, and your Bluetooth card that are inside your iMac. Do you see the device attached into the suspect USB port? If you move the device to another USB port you can press the command-R keys to refresh the device tree list. If the known good device doesn't show up when it is connected to the suspect port then you have confirmed that you have an issue with that port. Even if you choose not to take your system in for service I still recommend contacting Apple so that you can create a case to document the issue in case you want to fix it at a later date.

Thank you for your effort to help. But all this I have tried before. And it really seems to be a HW problem. The last of the 4 rear ports seems to be bad. It is not listed in profiler. Contacting Apple is probablz the onlz thing I can do. But as I live in Slovakia and there are only a couple of Apple representatives here, there is very little hope to solve it. But I'll give a try.

Before you give up, have you reset your SMC? Try this

    Shut down the computer.

    Unplug the computer's power cord.

    Wait fifteen seconds.

    Attach the computer's power cord.

Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

You are very nice trying to help. But I have found all these reccommendations before and did try them step-by-step. Nothing had helped. And I have read in other forums that this syndrom appears up&there with iMACs. So I am very probably the unlucky one buying a defective piece.
