I had the same problem...
You need to open Activity Monitor (shows running processes) and manually select and stop the Microsoft Database Daemon and the SyncServices apps.
To get the Activity Monitor running, I just serched help on the Activity monitor and got it to launch from one of the help items.
Maybe someone can add a better way to get the Activity Monitor running...

Thanks very much. Having never had the need before, didn't realize I had the option to close programs thru Activity Monitor but it makes sense. Of course, on my next attempt to install the MS upgrade after posting this question it worked without me doing anything. But I will definitely remember this moving forward. I appreciate your help.
