Q: I am importing .mov files created on Canon 5D mk ii and Aperture gives me the "unsupported Video Format" and only refers opening and playing file to Quicktime or Realtime Player.  Why?

For your Canon 5D only the H.264 is supposed to be supported; have you checked if the movies have been imported correctly from your camara by opening them in Quicktime or iMovie? I don't have your camera model, so I cannot try it myself, but usually Aperture should open the movies directly, without falling back on Quicktime.

I have exactly the same problem as Stephen D trying to download .mov clips from my Canon S100.  I've searched the web to ascertain if the Canon can save in any other format, but it seems all videos are saved in the H.264 format.

Just as a relatively unimportant (but confusing) aside it seems Aperture does not save iPhone videos.  Is this deliberate or just that the Aperture software was released before the new iPhone?

Could anyone recommend a solution please.

I have the same camera.  I seldom import video into Aperture, I use FCP X.  But I have imported video from this camera into Aperture.  So it should work for you.

How exactly are you importig, from the camera via cable, from a card reader, or are your clips aready on your computer or external hard drive somewhere?  If my memory serves me.....I think I imported clips from a card reader.

If you let us know I will try to re-create your method and see what happens.

If I read the specifications correctly my Canon S100 records video in similar formats as the Canon 5D Mark II, albeit not the 1280x720 30fps I normally use.

I import clips thro' the card reader on my MacBook Pro.

I've just taken a 9 sec. video at 640 x 480 30fps (which is one of the 5D Mark II formats) and tried to upload to Aperture via the card reader.  It took it's time (around a minute), but it imported + showed the opening frame as the thumbnail. I ejected the card via the upload complete dialogue + as I did so the thumbnail changed to a fuzzy black square with lines running across it (like the sound bars at the start of old VHS tapes)

The thumbnail doesn't say anything (no "Unsupported Video Format" icon) and nothing shows up in the viewer or viewer section of split view.

Any help would be appreciated.

I just imported 2 clips via Aperture.  Both were on an external HD.  The first one was in the root of the HD, so that should look like a camera to the software (at least it does in FCP X).  The second was inside a folder, that would not look like a camera in FCP.  This would be a file import.

Both clips came in fine once I uncheck "Ignore Video".

The clips are 1920 x 1080 H.264, Linear PCM.   29.97 FPS.

Are you perhaps using 24 FPS ?

Apparently, 24p is no longer an issue:  I imported and trimmed 3 clips from my 5DmkII shot at 24p just the other day.  I just confirmed that they are in fact H.264 1920 x1080 23.98 fps.

OP, does your camera have the latest firmware and is your software up to date.

I'm running OS 10.7.3 with Aperture 3.2.3.  My Camera firmware is 2.1.2

I am on 10.6.8 and 3.2.3 I am not sure about the camera, but I updated the firmware just  about 2 months ago.

So you can import 23.98 and I can import 29.97 FPS.  So all that is left for this camera is the lower resoultion settings and PAL frame rates. 

Stephen, if you could tell us what you are trying to import (resolution and frame rate ) and what versions you have for Aperture  and if you are 10.6 or 10.7 we might get to the issue.  Also how are you trying to import.
