I came home from work yesterday & went to my computer (iMac, Lion) & when I moved the mouse I see a big screen satying "Welcome to Skype 5"

I had skype 2.8 on my computer & I do not want to upgrade because I prefer the mini size of 2.8

So, I'm wondering what the **** is going on?

That now skype can download & install itself, bypassing me typing my password, when I am not even in the house.

Skype doean't need a password to download or launch.  Only a pw to log into th skype account.

Did you have check for updates automatically off in your preferences?

I am not sure, I will check later.

However I have had the computer & skype 2.8 for a number of years without this issue happening before...

I upgraded to Lion about a month or so ago, so prehaps the preference was reset.

I thought software on OS X could not install itself unless you type your system password?

A particular installer would (or should) only need to as for the admin password if it needs it, i.e., if it needs to install into the OS directories in certain places.  It wouldn't need it to install into your own home directory.

Most (not all) apps which you download and have no installers can be placed anywhere.  They don't have to be in /Applications but it is up to you where you "install" those apps.  Skype, no matter where it may be will only create a preference file (a plist) in your home directory (~/Library/Preferences) and a Skype folder in you Application Support (~/Library/Application Support), again in your home directory, so no admin password is required for those to be created.

Surely the Skype.app in /Applications is updated when you go from 2.8 -> 5.7

That would need admin password right?

Maybe yes, maybe no.   I certainly don't need admin permissions to store into /Applications running from my admin account.  Try it for yourself.  Just try to drag something into /Applications if you are logged into your admin account.  You won't be prompted for a password.  The file will just copy into there.

Generally for .pkg installers installing in /Applications they will ask for password since that is the way you usually define the .pkg installers when you create them.  Skype has no .pkg installer.

FWIW, as a general rule I never let apps update themselves.  I update when I want to update, not when they want to update.  Also I never keep third party applications in /Applications unless absolutely necessary.  I have my own organization for the way I classify and keep applications.  I leave /Applications mainly for the OSX applications as much as possible.

I use Skype 2.8 like yourself. It has never downloaded a newer version by itself. Someone must have selected check for updates and and downloaded it. It doesn't do it on its own.

I can't solve your mystery upgrade, however you can Reinstall 2.8

    http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/macosx/2-8

or Restore from your Time Machine back-up.

Turn off automatic updates in preferences:

I discovered in my App folder there were 2 items

         Skype_old.app

         Skype.app

    _old was 2.8

    So I deleted Skype.app & renamed _old

I have made sure to un-tick the auto updates

At least they were nice enough to back up the previous version!
