I know I can send it in to get it repaired replaced but I'd like to troubleshoot it on my own because I go on vacation in one week and want to have it for that!

1. Double-click the Home button to see all Inactive Apps
2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
3. Tap the minus sign to close App
4. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider
Note: If the above does not work, you may need to backup and setup as new

I cant even get into that before it starts the black screen again and brings me back to the lock screen. I've tried restoring it and it didn't do anything but I didn't set it up as new...
I'm restoring it again now but will set it up as new...
If this doesnt work, any other suggestions?

If a restore to new doesn't work, you can make an appointment with Apple.

I restored it back to an old backup date from about a month ago and it worked...but when I use my iPad its going through the motions as if I just got it...so it restored as a "new" iPad...this *****.

Hold the home button while plugging into tour computer and keep holding it down untill you click restore. It worked when it did that problem to my ipad 2.
Hope It Works !!!

Hi duhimdani, I experience the same and already almost give up, but yesterday I found the URL for backup and also restore http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808, the procedure of restore is like zach.p444 mentioned.
Plug the USB cable to PC and do not connect to iPad yet, Turn off the iPad by pressing and hold Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until red slider appears, then slide the slider.
After the iPad turned off, press and hold the home button, while hold the home button pressed, reconnect the USB cable to the iPad, it should turn on the iPad and picture Connect to Itune appear, if not repeat from the beginning.
Go to Itune on your PC, it should ready to restore, then press that button and follow the instruction accordingly.
My iPad has operated normally after the above procedures, hope it work to all of you who exprience the same.
Hope this usefull !
