Q: I have been using Logic Pro 8 on my Macbook OSX 10.5.8  Recently I purchased a new Macbook OSX 10.7.3 but cannot install Logic Pro 8 on it.  Do I need to purchase a new Logic Pro 9 or can I upgrade my Logic 8 to logic 9 and then install?

The basic problem with Logic 8 and Lion OS is that the installer program will not run under Lion. Logic 8.0.2 runs fine with OSX.7.2 and up (once you have got it installed.

I believe that you may be able to 'work around' the installer issues by first making disk images of all the Logic Install disks, mounting them all, and then use Pacifist to do the installation.

Alternatively, as Logic8-9 upgrades are no longer available, you could purchase Logic 9 from the Appstore.

I read that someone downloaded Rosetta and installed it in 10.7.2, it ran fine and they were able to install Logic 8.02.

Rosetta is also available on your 10,6 Install Disk, (see article above)

All attempts to install Rosetta directly in Lion have failed (as of this date).

If you are unable or unwilling to upgrade Logic 8 to a version that will install in Lion, you can:

1.  If your Mac will boot with Snow Leopard, install Snow Leopard in a partition or external HD and boot from there (seems doubtful that your new MB will do that); or

2.  install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta) into Parallels 7 in Lion, mount your Macintosh HD within the Snow Leopard environment and then install Logic 8:

Someone on this forum managed to install Rosetta in Snow Leopard... perhaps the booted from the SL install disk. It ran without problems.

Whatever code that Lion would require to use Rosetta is just not there.

Further, Apple's license to continue to use Rosetta in new OS' expired with Lion and IBM (the current owner of the technology) is not inclined to license it again, even if Apple were inclinded to do so.

IBM... really?   Or did you mean Intel?

IBM was the "father" of the PowerPC chip platform (in what was at that time a competitive alternative to Intel); and ultimately acquired all rights from Motorola and Apple; its joint venturers.

IBM then acquired Transitive, the company that wrote the original software that Apple licensed and called Rosetta:

UPDATE:

The photo posted above is Logic Pro 8 running in Snow Leopard virtualized in Parallels 7 in Lion.

I just attempted to install it into the Lion Macintosh HD from running the Logic Installer in Snow Leopard virtualized.  The Installer application does NOT see the Lion Macintosh HD in its Select a Destination window.  More work needs to be done for this approach to work...

Any ideas?

In the meantime, someone will have to work out an installation method using Pacifist (as CCTM suggests above), similar to this approach to installing GarageBand Jam Packs into Lion (which installer also requires Rosetta):

Great stuff, I knew (thought) PowerPC was strictly Motorola/Apple, didn't know IBM was in the loop at the beginning along with Motorola and Apple.  (AIM)

That was 1991.. Think I may have been using an Amiga 3000 for audio with a $1K Sunrize Zorro II audio card integrated with the Bars & Pipes (object oriented)  MIDI sequencer.

Here goes:

Make Disk Images of all the installer disks using Disk Utility

Mount all the images

Download Pacifist, and run it

In the main Logic Studio installer, there is an Alias called "Install Logic Studio". Control Click and select "Show Original".

There is a LogicStudio.mpkg multipackage, and a folder of Packages (Note the.mpkg will crash Pacifist)

Drag each individual package from this folder to Pacifist, select the .pkg and click "Install"

I had recently bought the latest Mac Mini (2012) running Lion O/S. Not knowing anything about all this PC Power mumbo jumbo and owning a fully licensed version of logic studio 8, which i wanted to install on my new Mac. I downloaded the Pacifist App as suggested by CCT. Extracted all the files to my hard drive (takes about 4 hours) found the appropriate start up icon in the logic pro folder, applied all necessary serial numbers and dongle when ask. Then waller Happy days

This is the best method. Use Pacifist and it will work like a charm. Only thing I regret is not creating disk images of the software prior to installing. Not doing so makes you have to insert all of the disks multiple time in which that part took about 3 1/2 hours. After that the installation process too a few hours too but Im not sure if my computer goign to sleep had anthing to do with that- figure it might.
