FYI ... Email from Apple support ... note the middle paragraph ...

"At this time, the security questions which appear are pre-set by Apple and may not be able to be answered, due to them being automatically issued."

    Full context here;

"..., from time to time, Apple enhances the security of our valued customer's iTunes Store accounts. While I understand that this change was not announced, Apple is constantly looking for ways to improve the security of the iTunes Store and help safeguard your account details and activity.

The new security questions were implemented for your protection and will help ensure that no one other than you can gain access to your account on a new device, without your direct authorization.

Please know that this innovative system is not intended to upset you; it is in place for your peace of mind. This new format will soon be the same on all iTunes Store accounts and Apple IDs. The following page outlines, in detail, how Apple protects your information:

    Apple Privacy Policy

    http://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

At this time, the security questions which appear are pre-set by Apple and may not be able to be answered, due to them being automatically issued. However, if you are not able to access your account, I can clear the challenge questions for you. Once I do this, you can sign in and add your own security questions. As well, you can optionally enter a "rescue" email address when you choose the challenge/response questions. Apple sends a message to your rescue email address when you forget the answers to the challenge/response questions.

To clear the questions I need at least 1 item from Group A and at least 2 items from Group B:

    Group A

Web order number for a purchase

Last 4 digits of a credit card that was used

    Group B

    Birth date

    billing address

    Phone number

    "

    I'm sure they meant well!

my mother is trying to access her account and is unable to because of these new security questions. In particular she only has one email address so can't proceed. What can she do.

I think the new e-mail address is optional, just 'advisable'.

Until you validate it via an e-mail to that address it's simply registered not validated.

Hey, I'm getting the same stuff.  I wish the security question would ask me "What company is the worst at implementing online security questions"... I'd enter APPLE !!!

Chris, the only thing that Apple monitors is the billions of dollars in their bank account.  They certainly aren't monitoring this user forum ;-)

InNeedofAnswers...   You should work for Apple !

Thank you for the phone number.  That was the answer I needed.  I got a polite senior level support man (Mr. Robinson) on the phone fairly quickly and after some time, they resolved the issue.  Now, I wonder why it occurred.  The interesting thing he said was that if someone on an IOS device purchases something for the first time (under the new security procedures), it would ask them to provide security questions for the account...hmmmm... wasn't me.

I have had the same problem with security questions, and have received much the same reply from iTunes security as jel.   I followed the instructions given and was able to reset my security questions.

However on trying to download on my ipod, it made me answer three more different questions.   Now I have two different sets of questions.   I dont understand how smart people in Apple can change questions and expect people to know the answers and understand what is going on.   A lot of people are unhappy.

Same thing.. I can't change my security Question...

I was getting a free app on my iphone I was prompted to add security question which I did.. But I thought this was odd so when I returned home I want to change change the question.. but is not asking the exact questions and I can not change them.. in fact I was locked out of my account last night.. This morning I changed my password.. but I am unable to change my security question...

Do you think that apple will address this issue? one more thing, not sure if this makes a difference My MacBook Pro is 2006 and I was unable to upgrade to iso 5 so I'm not in the cloud..

    Contact support:

    https://expresslane.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.do

The age of the MBP and not being on iOS 5 should not affect your iTunes account AFAIK.

I followed the step in the expresslane and I have a phone call appointment.. I'm wondering if the first question is going to be do you want to purchase apple care..

Not for iTunes Store I wouldn't have thought.  Their loss if they don't want to help you purchase things.

What if you were on Windows - AppleCare would not be possible in that scenario.

So after calling apple I was emailing back and forth with a representative. As I said before he referred me to these discussion boards to find my answer. I told him how unhelpful he was then he decided to help me. He asked me to answer 3 out of 6 account related questions (they were fair questions, nothing like "what's your credit card number, ssn, etc) to verify who I am, then he reset my security questions for me and I haven't had any problems since.
