File -> New -> Album -- then hold down the Shift key to change "Album" to "Empty Album".

Finally upgraded to OS 10.7.3 and to iPhoto 9.2.3 also devoeloped this problem of being unable to transfer photos by dragging like I always did. All kinds of other photos transfered, maybe the whole library, I don't know! Trashing the iPhoto pref file sounds like a good idea - DO NOT DO IT!  When I startted iPhoto afterward it was totally clean of the thousands of photos we had!!!!  Looked to import the old library and find it's 'greyed out' and unselectable. TI sure don't have the time to mess with figuring that out. Thank God I didn't empty the trash and reinstalled the original plist file back into the Preferences file.  iPhoto library and photos restored.

***The only method that was working for me with this issue was to select the photos you want in the album from the 'Events' library, drag them to the album and delete whatever was in that event folder from the album that you do not want there.  Clicking on the "Add To" button on the lower right of the iPhoto window brings up the albums but resulted in no change to the album.  INTERESTINGLY enough, now that I had this scare with the plist making the round trip to the trash can, this featuer now also works!!!!

These posts are from months ago and since we rescently upgraded it looks like <THE ISSUE IS NOT RESOLVED>  I hope someone from Apple looks into this and comments.

No idea what you're referring to here. Dragging what where?

That means you have more than one Library, and one of them is empty. You could simply have reselected your preferred Library:  Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

Looked to import the old library and find it's 'greyed out' and unselectable.

And a good thing too.  Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess. See the hint above for choosing a library to open.

The only method that was working for me with this issue was to select the photos you want in the album from the 'Events' library, drag them to the album and delete whatever was in that event folder from the album that you do not want there.

Select the pics you want to use, go File -> New Album. Result: an album with just the selected files.

I'm not that there's actually an issue - from the App Maker's point of view. It's working as designed. Select the pics and go File -> New Album, or shift-command-n for a new blank album is what they have designed in.

In any event, have you told them your concerns? Apple don't promise to read anything here. This is a forum for Users to speak to other Users.

Dragging:  Typically my wife has created albums then selected the photos she wants to add to that album from the Library titled "Photos" and dragged them to the album where they would dutifully deposit themselves.  This is the method of creating albums the other writers in this thread were refering to as well.  It now results in the entire library inserting itself into the album.  It never did this before so that is the issue.  The method you describe works for the first photos in the album... what of others added later?

I disagree that it works as designed.  If selecting individual photos and dragging them to the album is intended to result in all of the photos in the library being inserted into the album, what's the point of the album?  If that result is not intended then the app makers would have surely disallowed the dragging to work in the first place, no?

As far as telling them, who, what and where?  This forum over the last 10 years has been the best place for me to find answers to the issues that pop up.  I am not aware of even how to make issues known directly to Apple short of going to a store and talking to a Genius... which I rarely have time for so maybe I can learn a new trick here if you point me in the right direction?  I'd be happy to peck out a few lines to them if I knew where to go.

Oops. Sorry, should have read all the way through the note about contact info, I'll do that.  Thanks for your post.

In my tests, creating an album and afterwards dragging another pic to it means that the extra pic - only - gets added to it.

Sent something off to Apple just now, hopefully something comes of it...

Seems like the issue has resolved itself and has to do with the preference file.  As suggested above removing the pref file and restarting iPhoto resulted in not being able to see any photos!  Replacing the original pref file though got them all back AND full expected funtionality of iPhoto! Go figure. Anyway that worked for me.
