I  have not used ITunes since 2010 and I have just logged back to my account.   The billing details etc are there but not my library but there is a library of the guy who owned this PC before me - where has my music gone and how can I get it back

It's on the computer where you put it. If that's not your current computer, move it over from there. If it is, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and point it to that library.

Thanks Niel - I do not have the PC anymore so that is not an option.  Has Apple any mechanism to 're-supply' my library as I have it on my Iphone.

I guess that if I synch my Iphone with my PC or Ipad then I will lose the music currently on my Iphone - is that correct?

If you no longer have the computer then you're playing a very dangerous game.  In the event that something happens to your iPhone (lost, stolen, damaged) all content will be lost except what may be stored in iCloud.

iDevices are designed to be synced to a computer regularly.

    You should be able to:

    • Backup the device to the new installation
    • Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
    • Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
    • Restore the device from the backup

This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.

May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.

When you get it all fixed, make a backup!
