    I am running OSX V10.5.8 (Leopard) on 24in iMAC purchased October 2009 and it has also recently started to fail to connect to the internet/wi-fi after waking up. The fix in downloads does not apply to this version of software? It looks like it might be a wider problem than just the later software?

    I solved my situation...might be something u have already tried but it worked for me...its a bit annoying but once i did it all is good so far...

     

    I went and deleted ALL my saved networks and ALL my saved locations.
    Then I ignored the automatic location and created a new one - in my case "Home".

    Then once in Home I connected to my network and put in the password etc and applied all settings.

    Repeated the same for work wifi too. All i do now is just ensure I am in the right location - its a good way to seperate networks and not give airport any chance to stuff up.

    Once I'm connected now I put the macbook to sleep and open it and it connects fine...within 2 secs I can browse sites through any browser.

    Its just annoying if you have a lot of networks you connect to like starbucks and other public ones...but I'm not complaining anymore as it just worked for me...phew!

    I my experience it is the Java updates that cause the problem. If you have the stamina I would reinstall the opsys and avoid any Java updates.

    Thanks, dheerb and Ocalawill. As I am running 10.5.8 (Leopard) I have been contemplating upgrading to Lion via Snow Leopard but have been hanging back as it is probably a big job for someone like me. I think it is the way I will go and wipe my disc as I do it. I will keep in mind dheerb's networks approach as an option too!

    is it just me ... or did 10.7.4 finally RESOLVE the issue?

    for now I can say ... go to system update and install 10.7.4

    I think I got it worked out. Since 10.7 Apple respects the wifi country code standards, you can see this in your logs. The entries look like this:

     

    09-05-12 23:44:59,000 kernel: en1: 802.11d country code set to 'NL'.

     

    My problem seems to be that some idiots in the area have set their country code to CA which is Canada, where they are not allowed to use the 13th channel. Guess what was the least-congested channel that my router what set to: 13. When the MacBook picks up that country code first, the 13th channel becomes invisible to the MacBook, therefore hiding my network.

     

    09-05-12 23:44:58,000 kernel: en1: Supported channels 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 ...

     

    I set the channel to 1 which is allowed in all countries, this circumvents the problem for now. However there is no possibility for me to really fix this. Apple implemented this correctly and sets the country code to the first one it finds but this leaves users with wrongly configured AP's around them in the cold.

    10.7.4 resolved my problem!!!!!!

    I am very very happy its finally gone ... nevertheless it is a SHAME, it took apple almost a year to fix this bug.

    I'm really wishing to get home and update my iMac. I've been fighting with this WiFi problem for months.

    The question is, will the fix last??? Most of the fixes - either Apple, or blogger, seem to only work briefly. Then the issue comes back. Anyway we'll see.

    Sorry, 10.7.4 has not worked for me.

     

    Back to not ever sleeping, wasting energy.

    10.7.4 doesn't help but I'm actually testing the WiFi settings change to WPA + AES instead of WPA2 + AES and it look very promising.

    It looks like here is the problem. May you or someone else try it as well?

    Ooohhh my Gooooood!!!

     

    After updating to 1.7.4 my WiFi disconnected. AGAIN!!!

     

    I was waiting for the update hoping to be the end of the problem. AppleCare told me there was no solution and I had to wait for the update. Now I have no hope on this.

     

    The update seems useless. I have enough of this. My 2000€ iMac WiFi fails more than a 8€ PCI WiFi card.

    Dreamboy:

    I understand that you are determined to make use of each and every function on the iMac, but you are filled with angst and despair over such a little thing.

     

    Untill it finally gets fixed, you can do one or more of the following:

    1. Plug in an ethernet cable and turn off the wifi.  You have a dozen reasons why you don't want to do this,

    flixibility, portability, etc. 

    2. Move the Sleep slider to NEVER. This solves the probem , and if the 35 cents a week energy cost

    bothers you, skip a soft drink " Well, it is supposed to work, and I want it to work!"  has you wound tight.

     

    While you are at it, move the slider for the time at which the screen darkenss to about 15 minuites or so, and the "Screen Saver" to NEVER.

     

    You are putting way too much angst into this. It will get fixed, just not right now.
