Hi Guys!

I'm planning on bying an iPhone 4S in an Apple Store in the US. However, I live in Germany.

I'm going to get an unlocked one (that is to say SIM lock free) and was just going to use my German SIM card from my german contract.

Do you know if that's possible? I wasn't quite sure of what to make of the CMDS-carrier thing Apple wrote about the usability out of the US.

In Germany we don't have different kind of carriers. There is no real equivalent to AT&T or Verizon in the States.

What about the frequencies? Does the american iPhone support european frequencies?

Thanks a lot!

    The iPhone teck specs are right on Apple's web site - http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

    No worries about the frequencies as it supports all of

    • UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz);
      GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
    • CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz)4

    Just be absolutely sure you get an UNLOCKED phone from an Apple retail store.  I say be sure because you can also pay full price, say at an AT&T store and get a SIM-free phone (one with no contract) but it will still be carrier locked to AT&T.  The Apple Stores sell truely officially unlocked GSM iPhones.

    Why not buy it in Germany?  You would be assured the phone would work in your country, you would have a valid warranty.

    Buy it in the US and you have to answer these questions, and pay more than the price you presumably believe is cheaper - US sales tax has to be added, and if you are not etering the smuggling business there will be VAT and import duties to pay to get the iPhone into your country. Where you will not have a warranty, so if you need Apple's help you will have to return the phone to somebody in the US to return it to Apple.

    I'd rather spend the money.

    Why in the world would you do that when you can purchase an unlocked phone in Germany? If you do, and the phone ever needs serviced, you will have to bring it back to the US or send it to someone you know in the US to take it in for service.

    All unlocked iPhones are GSM only. Don't worry about the CDMA phones. They don't apply to you.
