I just returned my iPhone and got a new one. No issue with this or whatsoever, no I'm guessing it is a hardware issue. Just return your phones. Peace!

I am like everyone else here, I had the same problem with my 64G 4s but it didn't surface until a week or two after I got the phone.  I didn't have the phone replaced right away since most were saying their second or third phones still had the issue.  I recently started hearing some say that the new phones had a different mic in them so I went in and had my phone replaced.  The apple tech told me it was the mic on the bottom of the phone that is the issue.  If you hit speaker while on a call and everything works fine, it is because the mic on the top of the phone engages during speaker use.  I also note, he didn't hesitate to replace the phone which, as we all know, isn't cheap.  I still wonder if the issue isn't a combination of the mic and Siri together.  I had the most problems with my old phone after heavy Siri usage.  I finally turned Siri off altogether and stopped having the problem.  Could be just a coincidence.  Only a few weeks into the new phone and so far so good.  I did, however, just start having Siri issues.  The "lift to speak" option interferes with listening to voicemail.  Every time I would lift the phone to my ear to listen to voicemail, Siri would turn on.  Had that problem with the old phone too.  Disabled that option on the Siri settings.  Makes me wonder though if the mic issue will rear its head soon.  Keeping my fingers crossed that they are separate issues.  Which, when you put some thought into it, is a pretty sad way to think about an expensive electronic device that I spent good, hard earned money on.

I did restore my phone more then 3 times and kept it empty for few days but the same calling problem appears again.

What about apple comments on this issue ??? It seams that they sell it to us and run away!!! We need a solution for this problem asap as its not acceptable at all i purchased my phone for 1000$ and deserve a good technical support

It's a small thing that may be the problem.  I've found that when I experience the problem, my finger is covering the small grill on the bottom of the phone which is where the mic is located.  I move my finger and the caller can hear me.

I'm not discounting the various posts regarding resets, bugs, etc.  Just noting that I was experiencing the problem for my first 2 weeks with my phone, then changed my hold and no problems since.

I have the same issue. The microphone works intermittently. This is a critical bug as it makes phones calls impossible but also affects utilities like the voice recorder. I took my phone in to get fixed but when I got it back, the problem was still there. I suspect that they just reset my phone instead of actually fixing any hardware as all my apps were gone and I had to reload everything back onto the phone.

How can Apple still not be acknowledging this issue? People have been posting about it for 6 months now!

Tried that -- worked for about 1 day.  Then the problems started all over again.  I think I need to go back to the Apple Store.

I have replaced my 4S 32 two times and it is now time for its third time.

People have a hard time hearing me, I have tried two different operators, same problem. I am lucky to have an old iPhone 4 which works perfect.

In all cases a Bluetooth headset or a wired headset makes it work all the time.

I have the same issues with the 4 and the 4S.  I have a large business account and this week alone I have had three  4 I Phones microphones stop working and then today I have a 4S with the same issues.  Have any of you experience this problem after doing an update on software??? Thank you....

I had the problem when I first got the 4S - got mine when they first came out Oct 2011.  I haven't had the issue in quite a while.  I would say I haven't experienced any MIC issues since shortly after I downloaded the 5.1 update. (I downloaded the update as soon as it came out so whenever that was.)  Not saying that solved the problem - just that it was about that time.  I'm still using my original 4S - I never took mine back.  I always felt it was a software issue, not a hardware issue.

I am finding it odd that we have four I phone 4's that the microphones quit working this week. Two of them after updates... Thank you.
