I kid you not,  ever since I updated 10.7.4 last night, I've had at least 3 kernel panics, plus it wouldn't wake up from sleep.

Sometimes it seems to crash for no reason at all -- the computer will just be sitting there and I won't be doing anything; granted, I'm sure a skillion processes are running, but no more than I would usually run.

I have no idea what's going on.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Where are the pertinent logs hiding so I can share them with some wise soul?

Thanks, everyone.

I've just updated a Macbook (white Unibody) to 10.7.4 unisng the Combo Update and it gave a Kernel Panic while restarting from the update.

I tried to reboot several times but it never got passed the apple logo. In Safe mode, it stood loading for hours and didn't start either.

Then I tryed DIsc Repair e Disc Permitions Repair using the Recovery Mode. After rebooting I could access my files but in 10 minutes it gave me another Kernel Panic. Since then I have had 4 kernel panics.

I'm trying to re-install the OS from a Lion 10.7.4 DVD that I burned from the installer. My first approach was to install over the existing system but it also gave a kernel panic during installation.

Now I'll try to do a complete clean install formatting the HD. I hope it works.

I'll post an update as soon as it finishes.

    Thanks

I have been having kernel panics since yesterday after I downloaded 10.7.4 and rebooted. Spoke with Apple tech support and they had me reboot into my recovery partition to reinstall Lion. After several hours of reinstall, and reboot, I still get kernel panics. I have tried rebooting in safe mode and repairing disk permissions without luck. Also tried installing the combo updater without luck (still got kernel panics). I am now recovering wirelessly from my last Time Machine backup to 10.7.3. Should be complete in a few hours. What a PITA.

I see that many others are experiencing the same issues. Someone suggested removing FIPS but not sure how to do that. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3939533?start=30&tstart=0

In any event, I won't be updating to 10.7.4 until I have read on these forums that Apple has resolved the rollout issues with a patch.

Likewise!  Having the same issue.  I'm as mad as **** with this at the moment!

Went out for a bit to pick up kids and came back to a laptop in sleep mode. Upon waking it found a "Can't recover files" message and then tried to get it to restart transferring files by pressing the trackpad and space bar only to be greeted by  the lovely SBBOD. Reboot. Trying it again, 'cuz I'm a glutton for punishment.

This bites. Calling Apple (again) to see if some Genius has figured out a better way to fix this mess...

Just an update to say that Apple care was no help, except to say (a) haven't heard of this issue yet (b) restoring from time machine should work and (c) wait a week before trying to download 10.7.4 as the engineers will probably need to roll out a patch based on the various error reports they receive.

I should have told them I'm a shareholder, maybe they would have put me through to someone who could actually help?   I have to admit, I've been spoiled for 3 years on a relatively flawless computer and operating system. The last 24 plus hours have been painful and frustrating. I'm just glad my law school exams are over and this is summer break. Otherwise, I'd be REALLY ****** off.

I get Kernel Panic on initial start up. Have to hold the power button to shut down, then next start is OK.

    This was a bad update!

Thanks for the article. I have successfully rolled back to 10.7.3 with Time Machine for the time being. Not sure if I am yet brave enough to mess with surgically removing the SMC from 10.7.3 and transplanting it into 10.7.4. Wondering which of my third party extensions is no longer compatible. Perhaps "Free Memory". The other apps dont really mess with system management.

I am having the same issue. I just installed new RAM about a week ago and thought that might be the cause of the panics, but they started up after the update.

my KP's are not SMC related, but thanks. I will try and take picture next time it happens... seems that it occures on random boot :/

I wonder what they changed in the smc. I do use smcFanController to keep my older Macbook Pro's (3,1 i.e. late 2007) temperature down by increasing the fans' RPM. I would be nice if Apple had solved this issue, but I'd be surprised if they did.

What issue? All the changes to SMC in 10.7.4 do is log an error when 3rd party apps access the SMC. The 3rd party apps continue to function, no system hangs or faults. Just a system log with SMC read errors.

Same issue since 10.7.4 !! iMac will not wake from sleep and need to reboot to start at which point I get the "Your system had to restart because of an error" and I send the report to Apple.

When I installed the update it seemed to fail when it rebooted and I had to do this 3 times - each time the screen filled with Kernal related jargon and another reboot was requested by the machine - finally it was stable enough to start but now the sleep issue.

Please look into this and patch it !!

Same kernel panic nonsense as the others on sleep and shutdown on my MacBook Pro.

    10.7.4 was a bad update..

    Apple please fix ASAP!
