Still absolutely nothing after a few days. I've tried everything. Aside from that the app constantly crashes when trying to select a course. It's a bug ridden app, sadly.

I am getting these symptoms also.  The iTunes U app on my iphone 4 pops up a dialog that says

"Tap Continue and sign in to continue syncing with other devices"

I enter my password, the app pauses, and then the same dialog comes back up.  This repeats.

If I purposely enter the wrong password, I see instead a dialog that says "Your password was entered incorrectly."  This tells me that the first issue is not because of an incorrect password.

When you say that it works again for you, do you mean that you opened the program all the files you selected for download previously actually downloaded, or that you were now able to go back to the catalog, reselect them, and have them download? Just trying to figure out what to expect when/if it starts working for me.

See this post for some observations.

A nice feature of one of the courses that I've got to work is that the video segments stream to the iPad, which saves on storage, but I could download them if I plan to be out of range when I watch them.

The new course mechanism isn't completely tied up with the old as yet I feel. Another interesting side effect I discovered last night was three "missing" items in my library. I'm guessing bookmarks or some such had been delivered to my library via the cloud even though my library didn't yet have the content.

No, the previously selected items did not start downloading. I had to select them again.

I click on a course and when it opens, the subscription button appears for 1 second then dissappears. I can't subscribe to anything (using iPad).

Yup I have the same problem at home. I was able to subscribe at work. Maybe something to do with ip addresses. Support was no help and redirected me to the support page. For what we pay, they should at least route the problem to the correct group.

I finally find something I am seriously interested in that has content for iTunes U and the **** thing won't work, keeps prompting me for my Apple ID password, which I know works because I used it to post this problem.  I would like to be able to have this work, but this is one of Apple's persistent failures: these little things that they never fix.  Get off your butt Tim!!

    Way to resurrect a two-year old thread…

I'm not experiencing any problems, so maybe there's something wrong with your account. Can you install a free app from the App Store?

Which course are you trying to join? Is there enough space on your device to download all of the materials?

Patixa, Not sure if that is a compliment or an insult or what. I have no idea who you are, so I have no way to gauge or even attempt to understand the nature of your remark.  If you intended that as a joke or a criticism, then you should consider doing something else than replying to a serious question and a genuine concern with such a response.  If Apple can go through multiple upgrades of iOS and still have persistent problems, then they need to do some thinking.  To answer your questions: There is nothing wrong with my account:  I have been consistenly and recently been able to install free and purchased apps from the Apple Store, as well as perform all the software upgrades to my iPad Mini.  Plus, I have 6GB of free space on my iPad Mini which is more than enough room for the small amount of videos provided by CSNTM.

I have no idea who you are, so I only had your words to gauge or even attempt to understand the nature of your remark, and your words are obviously angry ("Get off your butt Tim!!"), short on detail, and appended to the end of a long-dormant thread. Not what I would consider "a serious question and a genuine concern", but I apologize for appearing as some random Internet troll to you.

To answer your question, I'm a user like yourself, trying to understand your problem so I might be able to help. Further, I have access to the developer forums to which I can escalate serious issues (if I can reproduce!). The dev forums occasionally get more attention than the Wild West of the discussion boards.

So, my questions were an attempt to diagnose and reproduce the problem. Let me walk you through my thought process:

    1. Does my account work? If not, perhaps there's a system wide failure (although two data points aren't enough to prove it).
    2. My account works, so perhaps your account has been invalidated for some reason. I've heard tell that iTunes U and the App Store use the same account database, so installing a free app checks your account.
    3. It's not uncommon for apps to poorly handle "out of space" errors, so a check of free space is a reasonable next question.
    4. Maybe there's a problem with the specific course you are trying to join. If you share a link to it, I will join it and see if the cource is frakked.
    5. Finally, knowing what version of iOS and the app your are using would help me determine if my tests matter at all: if we don't have the same versions, all of my successes are false positives because I don't match your environment.

Hopefully that helps you understand why I asked what I did. If you can provide clear steps of how I can try to get into the same situation you are in, maybe I can offer more than general advice.

Bachelor's Degree, graduated with honors from Cal Poly Pomona, 50 (yes fifty) years in the electronics, field service, desktop support business, previously Apple certified technician, retired, currently a private Apple consultant in my area.   Apple user for more than 20 years.  I am well respected among the Apple community in our town. And as for the remark about Tim getting off his butt, I think it is appropriate since after two full years and multiple iOS upgrades, there are still people that are having intractable problems with iTunes U.

I thought the statement "keeps prompting me for my Apple ID password" should have been enough information, but I guess not.., my apologies.  But, from my point of view, based on my long experience in customer support and customer service, you dismissed the seriousness of my quesiton and genuineness of my concern much too quickly.  I lost business and money every time I have done that.

    Reveiw of your questions/statements

    1. Does my account work? If not, perhaps there's a system wide failure (although two data points aren't enough to prove it).  ¬¬¬ Yes, my account works.  As I noted, I recently downloaded several movies from the iTunes Store, as well as free apps: iTunes U and Podcast.
    2. My account works, so perhaps your account has been invalidated for some reason. I've heard tell that iTunes U and the App Store use the same account database, so installing a free app checks your account.  ¬¬¬ As I noted above, I did install some free apps as well as recent purchases of movies.
    3. It's not uncommon for apps to poorly handle "out of space" errors, so a check of free space is a reasonable next question.  ¬¬¬ As I noted, I have 6GB of free space on my iPad, if you search on iTunes Store (see below) you'll see that the "course" is not demanding.
    4. Maybe there's a problem with the specific course you are trying to join. If you share a link to it, I will join it and see if the cource is frakked.  ¬¬¬  I already noted the name of the course: CSNTM.  If you take the time to insert that into the iTunes Store search field you will see it.
    5. Finally, knowing what version of iOS and the app your are using would help me determine if my tests matter at all: if we don't have the same versions, all of my successes are false positives because I don't match your environment.  ¬¬¬ I already noted that my iPad Mini has all the current updates: 7.1.1
