Apple says nothing about it being a hardware error. It's a problem with the security software on your PC. Disable the antivirus and firewall software temporarily. If you're using Kaspersky, you may have to remove it entirely. It's especially bad at interfering with the verification process during updates and restores.
Error 20, 21, 34, 37: These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. If you are using a PC, follow this article to resolve this issue.

I got the same info from the Apple web site. All this has been tried, both at home and by the Apple store "Genius". It was the "Genius" that said it was hardware, even though the error code says security software.

And did the genius offer you a replacement phone? If you were told by Apple that it is a hardware problem with your phone, and you opted not to take a replacement, there is no magic that is going to fix the hardware.

Yes... For $150. Or I can just upgrade to the 4S for $200 and 2 more years with AT&T.
The point is... It worked perfectly before IOS 5.0.1 update. Now it's a "hardware" issue.

It is what it is. You've been given options. The choice is yours.

there's alot you can do actually.. using different tools from popular iphone help sites online without having to jailbreak your phone or anything... its not a hardware problem and you could get your phone back just the way it is legally and safely anyone who tells you other wise is just a conformist jerk who wants you to feel bad, and clearly knows absolutely nothing about these phones except what they've been told

Same exact thing happened to my wife's 3GS. Went through all the steps to fix it with no success. Very frustrating!

Could you give me more details about "there's alot you can do actually.. using different tools from popular iphone help sites online without having to jailbreak your phone or anything."
I had exactly the same issue as described above : I installed the update 5.1.1 on my iphone 3GS and since then, I can not turn it on anymore. In Itunes, I get an error 37 when I am doing a restauration and it stops.
I spent several hours on phone with the hotline from Apple which arrived to the same conclusion : it is a hardware issue and they will repair it for 160€.
But the phone was working perfectly fine until I installed this update!
