I am about to get Apple TV3 (I currently have ATV 1)

With the ATV1 I have to seriously compress my Home Movie files to get them to work. I make my videos with Final Cut Express in full HD, 1920x1080 so the appeal of ATV3 is that it can handle full HD.

However, I realise from reading this forum that I will have to convert my movies for ATV3 and I have done this as a test on one file, converting in QT Pro.

The video converted as 1920x1080 but the file size roughly halved.

My question is: Will I be losing any meaningful quality? What is being lost from the original file?

Hopefully someone out there knows...

I found that video compressed to about 10 to 12 Mb per second, turnout with reasonable quality on the Apple TV 3.

Compression is achieved by discarding information that the application thinks can be recreated when the file is decompressed. Decompression is not perfect, and the more compression that is used, the less likely it is that decompression will restore the file to its original quality.

Have you tried using compressor, it's not free, but I found it results are excellent.

Thanks for the very prompt reply. I Haven't tried Compressor, but will now look into it.

Or just use the free and fast Handbrake on www.handbrake.fr

Use the "Apple TV 2" preset and change the resolution to 1920*1080 and you will get excellent results!

Also be sure to use the decomb filter if your FCP output is interlaced (which is less and less common)

I was making the suggestion of compressor, in the interests of quality. Handbrake is a cheap and cheerful product that does its job but isn't an alternative to compressor.

Thanks "Winston" but I have to disagree.

First, Handbrake is not cheap, it is free.

And having bought the Final Cut Suite since the beginning, as well as the current Compressor, I find it a real pain to use and clearly cannot see any advantage in using it over Handbrake for compressing home movies for an Apple TV.

And if money is no issue andyou want the best possible quality for an Apple TV3 output, FCP X's H264 export option is certainly the way to go.

"Cheap and cheerful", is an expression to describe the basic qualities of the product, it is not an inference of its cost.

If you wish to disagree, that's fine, I'm not here to argue with anyone, compressor has many expert reviews which I'm sure the OP can read for themselves if they wish to do so.

I have FCPX and still use compressor.
