Still happening after upgrading to 10.7.3.
I don't have a way to reporduce it other then waiting, other wise I would visit the store.

If it's happening completely randomly, unassociated with any action you might be taking at the time, it's probably some kind of alert from a messaging app like Skype or iChat. Those are probably the #1 cause of strange noises occurring apparently at random, because they make noises by default when friends come online, go offline, etc. If you have such an app, check its preferences and see if any of its sound effects are a match, or try turning off audio alerts entirely.

I do not have any messaging applications. I believe it is time based, like every x minutes, but I have not had the drive to time it. It will happen if I boot and don't open anything. I do not believe it is tied to a single application, I think it is system based. Not to mention it is not that kind of sound.

Do you have outlook? I had this, and I discovered it was the 'no new message' alert for outlook. Turn it off in preferences.
