My NEWS bookmark folder and its content of over 30 sites has disappeared on my iMac, my iPhone and my iPad. To retrieve every link one by one would take a long, long time. I have both iCloud and Time Machine backups. Can someone please tell me how I can retrieve the folder from a backup?

    Quit Safari and disable iCloud.

In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:

    ~/Library/Safari

A folder will open, containing a file named "Bookmarks.plist". Enter Time Machine and restore that file from the last snapshot taken before the bookmarks were deleted.

    Relaunch Safari and test.

Thank you very much Linc. My NEWS folder is back! One further question: will the folder return to the iPhone and iPad as a result of automatic syncing or is there a danger that the iMac will lose the folder again? It seems to me that the iMac was the last to lose that folder, as if it came to emulate the other two. Is there something further I need to do to ensure they all have the NEWS folder in their bookmarks?

I don't use iCloud, so I can't help you with it. If it deleted the bookmarks, I suppose it might do so again. That's not the way it's supposed to work, according to what I've read, but it's in an early stage of deployment and has bugs. As long as you back up your data religiously, you're not at risk of losing much.

Given that iCloud doesn't seem to deal with Safari stuff, my situation becomes ever more mysterious. I retrieve the plist from my Time Machine backup and my NEWS folder is back. Within a short time it's gone again. Why does Safari revert to a damaged state? Surely the iPhone or the iPad can't be wagging the dog? If they're not causing the problem what is?

Whoops! There is a BOOKMARKS item on iCloud. I will try unchecking it, retrieving the plist and waiting for the other devices to sync to the iMac. The interesting thing is that iCloud doesn't capture the new plist when I retrieve it from Time Machine. Maybe it's all a matter of when iCloud actually takes data from me. I'll try this and see what happens. Sorry for this scrambled situation.

I too accidently deleted and lost a Safari bookmark folder with several years of bookmarks saved for my business.  No way I could have remembered all those links.  Since I do have Time Machine, I just tried the solution suggested above and HALLELUEA!!!!   It worked and I have all my deleted bookmarks back.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I'll take you through all the possibilities of recovering the lost Safari bookmarks.
=> Check for iCloud backup if you have any so that you can restore the bookmarks saved on iCloud.
=> Check for iTunes backup. Download and install the free download software ""iPhone Backup Extractor" and launch the app. It will automatically search for any backups on your computer.
=> Check for your lost bookmarks in Windows/Users/Contacts folder. There are times when iTunes saves the contacts in this folder.
Hope one of these methods will help you.
