I understood you to say that you couldn't boot into Recovery. If you can, then erase the boot volume and reinstall the Mac OS.

It sounds like your hard disk is dead. Does that machine have a mechanical hard drive or SSD?

I'll let it boot Recovery one more time. FIY i was never able to boot recovery. The HDD is mechanical, but i don't think it's dead. I had no problems w/ it.

It is sure acting like it is dead. Did you have any kind of encryption on it? Maybe that is what the FIPS software was doing.

You can install Lion or Snow Leopard on an external drive, boot from that, and maybe make a backup of the startup drive. Then you can erase and reinstall Lion.

May I ask where you got this computer? It has software on it that's used only by government agencies and other security-sensitive organizations. Why don't you know that?

FIPS has nothing to do with FileVault. If you bought the machine new, it didn't come with FIPS, so you must have installed it. Why did you do that?

If recovery is now working, you can erase the boot volume and reinstall. You say you have no data, so that shouldn't be a problem for you. FIPS doesn't come with Cinema 4D or Photoshop. It comes only from the source I linked earlier. If you didn't install it, who did?

Just curious, did you experiment with a developer preview of Mountain Lion?
