40+ mins. Stuck at spinning gear
Can't it be rewritten? w/o erasing? Maybe i can put the Lion image onto a USB and reinstall without erasing. Will that rewrite the recovery as well?

I'll let it boot Recovery one more time. FIY i was never able to boot recovery. The HDD is mechanical, but i don't think it's dead. I had no problems w/ it.
It is sure acting like it is dead. Did you have any kind of encryption on it? Maybe that is what the FIPS software was doing.
You can install Lion or Snow Leopard on an external drive, boot from that, and maybe make a backup of the startup drive. Then you can erase and reinstall Lion.
It's got Filevault2 on it. It's mine, bought from our Apple reseller. I installed Lion personally.
I started an install directly from the OS. Now it's asking for reboot. I'll see what happens.

I did NOT install FIPS. Maybe Cinema 4D's netrender? Or Photoshop CS6?
Anyway, i did a reinstall without erasing, and recovery works! But sine i have Filevault now, i can't boot verbose to check if FIPS is there...

If recovery is now working, you can erase the boot volume and reinstall. You say you have no data, so that shouldn't be a problem for you. FIPS doesn't come with Cinema 4D or Photoshop. It comes only from the source I linked earlier. If you didn't install it, who did?
