Place your phone in DFU mode (search google) and restore

I've now tried this several times but itunes/computer still wont recognise the iphone. In the process putting it in DFU mode the last step is to keep holding the home button until a message comes up in itunes, but the message has never appeared (held it for 5 minutes one time and still nothing). There's nothing coming up on my iphone screen, and to get back to the connect to itunes screen I have to fully restart with sleep & home button, so I can only presume that it's going into DFU mode correctly. Also going in and out of DFU mode, or restarting the phone, when plugged into computer it makes the right noises for something being plugged in but yeah still isn't showing up anywhere.

Sounds like it's time to bring your phone into Apple.

Yeah I feared as much, was hoping to avoid it as I'm travelling and seem to be a couple of days away from any Apple stores, but never mind... Thanks anyway.

I had exactly this issue with my iPad. Incredibly, support suggested I try a different PC, and it worked.
Why my main PC is able to do everything except perform a software update is beyond me.
