So I made the switch from Windows. I did this based on my experience with ios. so far I like Lion but have one major issue that may lead to returning the mini. It is a 2011 mac mini i7. I have it connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2494 SW via the included hdmi-->DVI connector. I am using a DVI single cable. Any text, whether it be system font or web page or application, is jagged. This is a major issue. I cannot not find any solutions to this. I called Apple support and was directed to take the mac and display into an Apple store.

Has anyone had any experience like this? If so, any ideas as to what I can try? The display under preferences on the Mini is at 1080p which is the native resolution for my monitor. I do not have any issues when the monitor is hooked to my pc. I bought the mini because of its supposed compatibility with monitors allowing a user to keep their existing monitor. Please, any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Do you have a screen shot?

Hmmmm, my vision isn't so good, but I cannot see the jagged text!?

Displays does in fact say 1920*1080? What KHz?

Any way you can view your Mac screen capture on the PC to see if it appears different than on the Mac? (Thinking possibly the Video card on the Mac is putting out a clear picture, but something strange is happening between there and the display).

Had that happen on an older Samsung Monitor on a Mini, screen display was fuzzy, but screen capture looked perfect on another Mac... I think it was due to the number of bit planes Samsung used.

This is weirded because I'm  now looking at my screen shots on my iPad and they do not look jagged. But definitely are on the Samsung screen when attached to the Mac. There is no Samsung driver for Mac on the Samsung website. Could this have anything to do with it? Or could it be because I'm using a single dvi cable instead of a dual? Maybe id be better getting a different adapter and going off that instead of the surrent setup which is using the Minis hdmi output?I really like the Mac mini over my pc but this issue isn't one that I can just brush off.

Yeah, the screen shot actually takes a picture as it is in the Video card/VRAM, not really from the screen itself.

Does the PC use a Samsung Monitor Driver do you know?

I have no idea if a different adapter would work or not, a search reveals many Samsung problems, here's one, & has possible fix...

Thank you for your help on this issue:) Those articles were helpful. That code mentioned in the article helped a bit"defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2T" the font within the mail app and within the web is definitley smoother but still not ideal. But in finder and within any of the system menus not much improvement....For the my PC when hooked up there is a Samsung driver that is used. I'm planning on taking it into an Apple authorized store tomorrow. It is a hike though and I was hoping to avoid this. I have untill this Friday to return it which I hope I don't have to do. I'm wondering if it could be an issue with going from the hdmi out. Maybe if I went from the Thunderbolt port-->dvi adapter-->dvi cable-->Samsung it would help? Thanks again for your time and help on this it is greatly appreciated.

I don't really know the answer to your question, on the one hand I think it's Apple's drivers, on the other hand I think it's Samsung's non-standard implentation of the/in the LCD itself... I personally will never buy another Samsung Monitor.

Good luck at the store... have them hook it up to a good monitor... then try to sell it to you!

Well BDAqua; all the mini needed was a reboot after changing the font smoothing via the Terminal command:defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2. It's not perfect compared to what I'm used  to with Windows but that could be due to the different ways the OS's handle rendering text. Thanks again for your time and effort it is appreciated. I'll update this post when I try out a DVI-I dual link cable.

Try the monitor itself... change the name in the monitor menue itself for the input before tweaking the settings and see if it helps. What do yo have available in the monitor for input types? For some reason samsung stuff doesn't like the Mac mini HDMI output video and it looks BAD. I simply changed the name of the input on my monitor itself to "PC", the video cleared up the options changed in sub menues and now it's all good. Hope this helps.

All I have is either av or pc as input options within the Samsung 2494sw's menu. It is currently set to pc which is definitely better than the av option. But this had no effect on the jagged text. It was inputting the command line referenced above that worked. Now when I say worked I don't mean perfect but it's good enough that I won't be returning the mini. I am disappointed that when I called apple support this was not an issue they could he

P me wi. I am also dissipated that I had to go througthe headache of the command line. It should be known that not all monitors work nicely with the mini. Thank you for you input :)
