Someone please help!

I am going to write the "history" from my disk utility repair here so that other's who copy and paste into search may find it:

(PLEASE SCROLL 13 ROWS DOWN)

Verify and Repair volume “Your Hard Drive Name”

Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

Checking extents overflow file.

Checking catalog file.

Keys out of order

Rebuilding catalog B-tree.

The volume   could not be repaired.

Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

Ok. I would really love to reformat this disk, but I have stuff on here from film school that I CAN NOT lose

Question:

How would I go about backing-up the disk if the image doesn't appear under devices? I went to the "Restore" tab/button, but I can not choose the hard drive in the first field. I could have sworn my hard drive was formatted for Mac, but I may have formatted it back to FAT32. I know the disk still functions because when it is powered on, it cycles with/without being connected to my MacPro, but after that, it will only cycle if connected (confirming connection). It does run again when I connect the firewire cable. Here is my equipment:

8-Core MacPro 16GB-Mem RAID
MacOSX 10.6.8 | 2 X 1TB Internal HDD

&

Aug-2008 15" MacBookPro

(That I used the Maxtor-External with mostly)

DEVICE IN QUESTION

500GB Maxtor One-Touch Plus

FireWire 400 6-pin Connection Bus (2 Ports)

Purchased in Early 2008 from Staples

I can fit the back-up on my 2nd HDD in my MacPro or in my other External:

2 TB G-Technology G-RAID External

1 x eSATA |  2 x FireWire 800 9-pin |  1 x USB 2.0

Self Powered DC-IN

I have had a nightmare searching for answers, so any options you might have would be tremendously helpful. I can't lose the data because I have everything I did during film school on there. That stuff is basically what you pay for when you go to film school, you pay to show what you can do and what equipment you have used. SAVE ME FELLOW APPLE PEOPLE!!!! Get Disk Warrior that will repair the problems without requiring that you reformat the drive - $99.00 on a bootable CD. Will not work on a FAT formatted drive.

You will need to use Drag and Drop to save your files by copying them from the bad drive to a good one.

    To reprep the drive:

    Drive Preparation

    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.

    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Whilst Disk Warrior is your best and only hope, in most cases your data is lost.

No time to think about how you have all your life's savings stashed under the mattress when the house is on fire. You should have put it in the bank. You say how vital this is to you but you never even made copies back to DVD?

In the case of vital work on a computer that means full back-up to an exteranl hard drive/s, preferable kept separate from the originals location. Time Machine will make that dead easy for you and there are plenty of other backup solutions.

All the rest is regret and wishful thinking.

    Kappy:

Thanks for the info brotha. I just got back and I have obtained Disk Warrior, it is only Verison 3 (I believe version 4 was available too). I will see if this works then let you guys know if I was successful.

You are going to need version 4.x.

Do not use DW 3, don't use Apple Disk Utility either, unless it is suitable and certified for the OS you have, and DW 4.4 is what is needed for current Mac OS.

Am I able to update DW? Or must I find the whole new version? Just wondering if I should even install, I already burned DW3 to a CD-R.

Where did you get DW? You should have purchased 4.4 at Disk Warrior website. They no longer sell 3.x on their website.

    AND JUST TO MAKE SURE,

This "Disk Warrior" is what I am using to recover/drag & drop my old files correct? Is it just allowing me access to those files, or is it fixing the problem so it will actually function and I don't have to (even though I should, and I will this time) backup the files? I just want to make sure because you said:

"You will need to use Drag and Drop to save your files by copying them from the bad drive to a good one."

And that could mean you want me to do that before I use Disk Warrior. But I can't see the external HDD in Devices in finder, it only comes up in Disk Utility.

Sorry, I am just super concerned. Thanks again.

No. DW doesn't recover files. DW fixes directory corruption that cannot be repaired by Disk Utility.

Yes, I suggest you do your file backups first if possible as a precaution. Otherwise, you will need to first repair the drive then make a full disk backup for future use.

Disk Warrior has an FAQ on Alsoft

The program has a Preview Mode for mounting current and "repaired" view of the disk.

Some drives are bad enough that the system could not boot with the drive powered on, and could not be mounted and it has a feature to allow mounting ("D")

    READ. FIRST.

There is feature to Option+Click on "Rebuild" that will do a more thorough deeper scan of files and bypass the directory.

A severely corrupt disk directory can take hours, and in rare cases even go for couple days (good to have a UPS no matter what but especially now).

It is always best to have backup copies and sets. The old ounce of prevention vs pound of cure.

Do not INSTALL Disk Warrior or any other Utility if you ever want to see your data again. You need to boot from another drive or the DVD, and run the Utiity from there, and that is another reason you need the right version.

The disk blocks needed to Install the program will be taken from the free list on the wounded drive. At this point, you do not trust the free list not to contain Vital parts of your data. So do not Install anything onto that drive.

Some utilities take this to even more extremes. Data Rescue, for example, refuses to recover anything to the same drive or fix the directory. You need to provide it with an additional drive, and anything recovered will go to the new drive.

DW won't even run from the active startup volume except to repair a different drive. It is not a file recovery utility, just a directory repair utility.

Ok, well I just purchased DW. I was excited to use it only to come back here to find out that's not what I need. Yes, I understand DW fixes the damaged drive. You said:

"Yes, I suggest you do your file backups first if possible as a precaution. Otherwise, you will need to first repair the drive then make a full disk backup for future use."

This is exactly what my question was. I want to know how to drag and drop these files!!!!!!!!!! THE DRIVE DOES NOT SHOW UP IN FINDER UNDER DEVICES, SO HOW DO I BACK IT UP?!?!?!

When I ran DW, it didn't show The Damaged 500GIG MAXTOR that I am trying to retrieve the files from. I could care a less about this HDD, ill throw it away, I just want the stuff off it. I am computer literate and I feel like I can navigate and work with these mac's as good as anyone, but this is driving me nuts. The first questions I asked was how to get these files off. I was told get DW. But then you said backup the files before you use DW. How do I back anything up if it doesnt show up in finder? How and I supposed to DRAG AND DROP, IF THE DISK IS NOT THERE TO DRAG AND DROP FROM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys are awesome for helping me and I really appreciate it, but just read this and see if you can help me:

Forget all other questions and things you know, this is what I need to do:

Hi my name is Raph, and I have a 500 Gig Maxtor One Touch Plus that will not show up under finder. I want the files from this disk. I dont care at all about fixing the thing, I just want DRAG AND DROP the files I need. I've heard I can use Disk Warrior to fix the drive AFTER I get the files. SO HOW DO I GET THE FILES BEFORE I USE DISK WARRIOR TO FIX THE DRIVE? The external hard drive shows up in disk utility, but not in finder. I have no idea how to back anything up without seeing it in finder.

I correct myself, the drive DOES show up in Disk Warrior under: live.0.indexDirectory

Does Rebuild on DW mean it will erase the files? I know you said to backup before I did it, but obviously I need you to tell me how to backup a drive that doesn't show up in finder hence the Title Question: "Back-up / Retrieve Files from an external hard drive that doesn't appear in Devices"
