When I boot up my Mac Mini with OS X 10.7.3 now it appears first of all with a black area on the left and a stretched Apple symbol. Then it changes and ends with the right desktop, should I be worried as I have used disk utility to check the HD. Please can anyone help?

Sounds like it's just your display and your mini adjusting themselves to talk to each other on boot up.  If it always settles down correctly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Do you have access to (or can you borrow) another display to try that?

As long as you didn't Format/Erase anything with Disk Utility, I'm sure you didn't do any harm.  Verifying, or repairing, the disk (and/or its permissions) should be fine.
