May 16, 2012 1:14 PM in response to fatlaterby planb77,★HelpfulDoes this not happen when you do switch back over to the Apple earbuds? If so, that indicates an imcompatability between the headphones are the Nano. You'll have to look for a different pair. There isn't really anything else you can do.

I really appreciate a) your speed at answering, b) your diagnostic logic and c) your forthrightness about the situation.
For all this, I thank you.
Finding headsets that meet the requirements of ultrarunning is tough; and this requirement is more important than the brand or the properties of the MP3. My iPod nano 3rd generation served me well. I was expecting same or better from 6th generation.
As to headset compatibility - I am an electrical engineer, and I have a really hard time with the idea that there would be compatibility problems when it comes to headsets. There is a universal standard for the jack, and there is a universal standard for the impedance. Are we saying Apple chooses not to meet these elementary standards?
Yours nonplussed,

May 16, 2012 2:07 PM in response to fatlaterby planb77,No problem. Nice to know I'm working with somebody who has a pretty good handle at such things! I'm quite positive that the jack is using universal standards. However, the new 6G Nano is designed to go into sleep mode when the display goes to sleep if it does not fully detect the headphone set that is currently plugged in.
So you have confirmed this does not happen with the standard Apple earbuds?

May 16, 2012 2:41 PM in response to planb77by fatlater,Good point - I realized I was not responding to your suggested test as I was hitting reply. I will try the iPod with the Apple headset at the gym in a few minutes, and report back!

Same behavior with the Apple earbuds. Turn music on; and music turns off within seconds. Wait. Then maybe screen suddenly lights up. Quick, press play! Oh, too late, it went dark again. Fuss with the device. Suddenly screen lights up. Press play. Music! A few seconds, then off. Arghhh. And this happens whether I run or whether I am lifting weights.
Then, for the last half hour, fine behavior. Double click goes to the next song. One click lights the screen on. One click lights the screen off. Running, walking, or stretching.
Net net, same erratic behavior as with the other headset. I made sure the Apple jack was fully inserted per the photo on another thread in this support community. The part where the iPod was working fine also explains why the genius at the store thought I was gaga when I claimed there was a problem.
Shuffle shake is off; double click on big button set to next song; all other options off.

May 16, 2012 6:20 PM in response to fatlaterby planb77,That is strange indeed. Do you keep your Nano in a case to prevent any moisture from seeping into it? Moisture has been known to cause such erratic behavior before in these smaller 6G Nanos...

May 16, 2012 6:45 PM in response to planb77by fatlater,Yep, that's probably it. No red dot. But lots of outdoor running. It has a very skimpy rubber cover. Thank you for entertaining the strange case of the erratic Nano... :-)

May 17, 2012 6:14 AM in response to fatlaterby planb77,Well even it doesn't have the red dot that is viewable from inside the headphone jack, there is still a chance that moisture has crept inside.
Have you tried a hard reset of the Nano yet to see if that makes a difference? Or perhaps even a full restore of it via iTunes to rule out any sort of software issues or corruption?

May 17, 2012 12:17 PM in response to planb77by fatlater,Yes, this is probably the most resetted/restored iPod in the market
The reset I apply is both the <volume down> button and the big button at the same time for 9-10 seconds. I actually tried this over and over until I ran out of battery during a run. Obsessive compulsive behavior is apparently of no help in this situation.

May 17, 2012 12:35 PM in response to fatlaterby planb77,Try drying it out even if you don't believe that is come into contact with moisture in anyway. Use packets of desiccant instead of rice. Place the desiccant and Nano in a zip log baggie and let it sit for a few days.
Are you still under the 1 year warranty that covers manufacturing defects? Perhaps it would be worth making a trip to your local Apple Store or Genius Bar to see if there is anything they can offer.
I'm running a bit low on ideas.
