Q: Need a link to correct version of Mail...

I'm getting this error message when I try to launch Mail, having upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3

'You can't use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OSX.  You have Mail 3.6.'

Where can I find a link to the latest version of Mail?  I have tried doing the software update, but the problem persists.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Ok, your Mail 3.6 is for 10.5 Leopard

You upgraded OS X to 10.6 and thus Mail shoudl have been upgraded to Mail 4.x

    However this didn't occur.

You have ran Software Update under the Apple menu and you should be on 10.6.8 correct?

If not then do this and see if your Mail program works.

If not your going to need to backup your Users files folders (Music, Pictures etc) off the machine to a storage drive and disconnect it.

Next open your Applications folder and drag the Mail 3.6 icon to someplace else out of that folder.

Stick your 10.6 installer disk in and there should be a bundled program installer, it should replace Mail with the 4.x version from the disk.

Once you do that then hit Software Update again until clear, you can trash the old Mail program your emails are stored elsewhere.

Why the bundled program installer didn't work when you upgraded to 10.6 is unknown.

Ok, thanks.  So I've got Time Capsule running continuously....will this be enough of a back-up before performing Step 2 of your answer?

Yes, if I look at Mail Info under System Preferences my Mail version seems to be 3.6, not 4, so it looks as if I need to perform the next step.  Will wait till my backup has finished (it had actually been unplugged accidentally so is a few days behind!) and try reinstalling again.

    Thanks, will keep you posted!

Yaay, it worked, thank you!  I managed to correctly reinstall Mail and it's all working fine.

Now just need to reinstall my wireless printer connection - groan....!
