There is a red number 1 attched to my AirPort Extreme and one of my AirPort Expresses in the AirPort Utility. What does it mean? ( I just started using AirPort)

AirPort, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

It's a warning.  The number tells you how many messages are waiting for you to read them.

Thanks. But how do I access the messages? The only choices I can see on the devices are Edit and Update, neither of which shows any messages.

Click on the router in airport utility. There should be a text line that says STATUS. Click on it to read the status messages.  Do you see any amber circles anywhere? On the drop-down that has the EDIT button, click on the ambert circle.  IIRC it should be there.....    But man I do hate that PoS 6.0

We must have different versions running. If I click on the router, all I get is the dialogue box for Edit or Updat - no Status line. If I click on Edit, there is no tab with messages. Also, the Edity drop down does not have any amber numbers or message line. I have OS 10.7.4 and AirPort 6.0.

Well that is strange, so I suggest this. Ignore that PoS 6.0 utter piece of trash.... and download 5.6.

Finally downloaded 5.6, and it told me that I needed a firmware update in the two devices. What is wrong with Apple that they would release a utility which doesn't tell important information?

I had the same question so I hit the update button.  It ran the update and the number went away!  So there you have it!

The red number beside any device in Airport Utility indicates that the divice needs a firmware update. Click on the device and hit the update button. The firmware will update and the red number should be gone

Thank you for this simple answer. I had the same issue and for some reason it isn't that clear what to do about it. Thanks!
